Morning Rumors: Bruins, Rangers, Red Wings, Senators, Leafs and UFA Trade Candidates

  • Spector’s Hockey: CBC’s Glenn Healy thinks that with Dennis Seidenberg’s injury, Bruins could call the Rangers about Dan Girardi. Elliotte Friedman wonders if the Ducks could have interest as well.
  • Mike Halford: Doesn’t see the Bruins make a big move just because of the Seidenberg injury. May be more of a “rental, plug-n-play situation.”
  • Sean Gentille: When the Bruins put Seidenberg on the LTIR, they will have a little more than $6 million in cap space. Will give them enough room to make a deal.
  • Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: The Bruins will try to replace Seidenberg from within for the time being. If it doesn’t work from within, they could look at bringing someone in. Options could be pending UFAs: Henrik Tallinder, Dan Girardi, Mark Stuart and Chris Phillip.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: The Red Wings are need of a top-four defensman, a right-handed power play quarterback. The Wings are tight against the salary cap. Kyle Quincy is their top candidate to be traded. He hasn’t played well though, and has a $3.775 million cap hit. They might be trying to trade Mikael Samuelsson, but he has a no-trade clause, is not producing and has a $3 million cap hit. The top rental defenseman may be Dan Boyle, but it’s unlikely the Sharks will trade him. Other rentals could be: Marek Zidlicky (NJ), Henrik Tallinder (BUF), Kris Russell (CAL), Tom Gilbert (FLA) and Andrew MacDonald (NYI). The Wings may have had some interest in Zidlicky last summer. Khan thinks that Devin Setoguchi (WIN) could be a good fit. Other forward rentals could include: Tomas Vanek (NYI), Matt Moulson (BUF), Dany Heatley (MIN), Mike Cammalleri (CAL), Jaromir Jagr (NJ) and Ales Hemsky (EDM). Drew Stafford (BUF) and Tomas Fleischmann (FLA) have a year left on their deals, but could be available. If the Canucks are looking to trade Alex Edler and if he’s willing to waive his no-trade clause, the Wings would likely be interested.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray has been looking for a veteran forward and a puck-moving defenseman. The Senators are on a strict budget, so it will have to be money in, money out.

“We have a great belief in this group, that they have the makings of a good group,” said MacLean. “Are they right now? Nope, they’re not. Do we need to make changes to it? We evaluate that every day.

“In order to make change somebody has to leave and somebody has to come in so if you’re making change just to make a change, right now we’re not at that point, just making a change just to make a change.

“If we can make a change that’s going to improve our progression in becoming an elite team or a better team, then yeah, we’re going to do that, just like every other team is going to do that — make a change that’s going to make a difference.

“We’re going to be patient. We have great belief in our young players, that they’re going to improve and they are improving, we just have to keep working with them and coming here every day and working at getting better.”

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Another injury could eliminate Marian Gaborik’s trade value at the deadline. Other top rentals could be: Thomas Vanek, Matt Moulson, Mike Cammalleri, Ryan Callahan and Jaromir Jagr. You have to think the Penguins will be looking for someone to fill in for Pascal Dupuis. Brooks says the Maple Leafs would “love to find a taker for Nazem Kadri.”
  • Nick Kypreos: “Phaneuf terms were agreed to and never fell off 7 yr/50m range @Sportsnet reported in Oct. Signing off on no move or limited no trade left.”
  • CBC Hotstove – Michael Del Zotto and CBA travel restrictions on the holiday break.
