  • Katie Strang of ESPN: Rumors floating around that the Rangers could trade Ryan Callahan, and it’s thought that they may not restrict themselves to only dealing with the Western Conference. Callahan is in the final year with a $4.25 million cap hit and may be looking something in the $6 million range. Can the Rangers risk losing Callahan for nothing after the season? The Rangers may be able to get a high pick, a prospect or both.
  • Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News: Ryan Callahan’s agent has said there have been “detours” with regards to contract negotiations.

“I want to be a Ranger. I want to be here,” Callahan said. “As a pending UFA (unrestricted free agent), if talks go on this long, there’s going to be talk (in the media). But I can only focus on what I can control.”

  • Andrew Gross: Ryan Callahan said he wants to stay with the Rangers. He realizes there will be constant rumors until his future is settled.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Sources saying that Dan Girardiis looking for a six-year contract at around $5.5 million a season. The Rangers countered at six-years and around $5.2 million or five-years at around $5.7 million. It looked like they are close enough to get a deal done.

Sources saying the Rangers have interest in Avs winger Jamie McGinn.

Brooks wonders what the Kings, Penguins or Bruins would give up for Callahan.

  • Jim Matheson: Matheson notes that if Callahan his looking for seven years and $42 million, that is in the same ballpark as Dustin Brown’s eight year, $5.875 million cap hit.
  • Jim Matheson: The Rangers could use Dan Hamhuis ($4.5 million cap hit) as a comparable for Dan Girardi. Both players are 30 point defenseman.
