- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Brooks Orpik’s plan would have been to play in the Stanley Cup if the Penguins had made it that far. Orpik’s future with the Penguins is now on hold until a new GM is hired.
“We still have time,” Orpik’s agent, Lewis Gross, told the Tribune-Review. “Brooks isn’t a free agent until July. We’re not worried about Pittsburgh not having a GM right now.”
Orpik’s agent thinks there will lots of interest in him if he hits the open market. Matt Niskanen, Jussi Jokinen and Deryk Engelland are also waiting for the team to hire a new GM.
- Tim Panaccio: Brayden Schenn’s (RFA) agent said he hasn’t heard from Flyers GM Ron Hextall, but is not worried at the moment.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: The Flyers don’t have a lot of cap space to work with, only $6.55 million in space with the ceiling at $71.1 million (and it will be lower than that). They’ll need to decide if they are going to re-sign Ray Emery. It might make sense if they package Luke ($3.6 million) and Brayden Schenn (RFA) for a defenseman or left winger that would complement Sean Couturier and Matt Read.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Daniel Alfredsson and Jonas Gustavsson may be the only pending UFAs the Red Wings may consider bringing back from their list of: David Legwand, Daniel Alfredsson, Todd Bertuzzi, Daniel Cleary, Mikael Samuelsson, Kyle Quincey and Jonas Gustavsson.
