NHL News: A Different Penalty for the Senators, and Injury Updates

The NHL alters their penalty to the Ottawa Senators

NHL PR: The NHL decided to alter their punishment to the Ottawa Senators and granted them the 32nd pick in the 2026 draft. The Senators were originally stripped of their 2024, 2025 or 2026 first-round picks for the role they played in an Evgenii Dadonov trade of not providing info on Dadonov’s no-trade list. The Senators were also fined $1 million CDN.

The trade back in 2022 was done under a different owner and different management.

The Senators’ original draft slot will be forfeited. If they miss the playoffs and win the draft lottery, there will be a re-draw.

NHL Rumors: The Cost Certainty of Players With Term, and the Montreal Canadiens Need to Gamble

TSN: Chris Johnston said ‘new’ owner Michael Andlauer was outspoken at first, but quieted down and wasn’t outspoken about it.

“I think really the fact he was able to deal with this behind the scenes led to the NHL coming around and seeing things his way, which is that A) he wasn’t owning the team at the time that this happened, and B) it wasn’t the current management staff in place when this all happened.”

NHL Injury Notes

Heather Engel: Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch missed last night’s game with a lower-body injury. Coach Lindy Ruff said if it had been a playoff, he would have went, but they decided to give him some extra rest.

Bruce Miles: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Wyatt Kaiser suffered an upper-body injury in the third period after a collision. Coach Jeff Blashill didn’t know if he’d be okay to play on Saturday.

NHL: Detroit Red Wings forwards Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Both have lower-body injuries.

Penguins PR: Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sam Girard missed last night’s game with an upper-body injury.

Joe McDonald: San Jose Sharks forward William Eklund had been a game-time decision last night with a lower-body injury, but he was able to go.

Sharks goaltender Yaroslav Askarov missed last night’s game after tweaking his lower-body during their morning skate.

Benjamin Pierce: Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nick Paul and defenseman Erik Cernak missed last night’s game, but will now be considered game-time decisions going forward, according to coach Jon Cooper.

Dave McCarthy: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews left last night’s game after taking a knee-on-knee hit from Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas.

Paul Delos Santos: Vegas Golden Knights forward Mark Stone returned to the lineup after missing the past five games with an upper-body injury.
