NHL News and Notes: Canucks, Ducks, Oilers, Coyotes, Flyers, Leafs and Islanders

Bo Horvat

On the Vancouver Canucks …

Cap Friendly: The Canucks signed Bo Horvat to a six-year deal worth $5.5 million a season. Some comparables in that range are Jonathan Drouin (six years at $5.5 million per), Jaden Schwartz (five years at $5.35 million per) and Brandon Saad (six years at $6 million per).

Cap Friendly: Horvat’s new deal doesn’t have any signing bonuses or trade clauses. Salary breakdown.

2017-18: $6.5 million
2018-19: $7 million
2019-20: $5.775 million
2020-21: $3.5 million
2021-22: $5.775 million
2022-23: $4.45 million

Blake Price: Canucks GM Jim Benning said that forward Brendan Gaunce will be out until at least early November after having shoulder surgery this offseason.

Stephen Whyno: Scottie Upshall will attend the Canucks training camp on a PTO.

On the Anaheim Ducks …

Kyle Shohara: Both Hampus Lindholm and Sami Vatanen were on the ice yesterday, which is encouraging after their offseason shoulder surgery.

On the Edmonton Oilers …

Jim Matheson: Anton Slepyshev‘s ankle injury that he suffered during training is not serious.

On the Arizona Coyotes …

Craig Morgan: The Coyotes will bring in right handed defenseman Tyson Strachan to training camp on a PTO.

On the Philadelphia Flyers …

Philadelphia Flyers: The Flyers announced that goaltender Anthony Stolarz had surgery on Thursday to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. He will be out indefinitely.

Stolarz initially injured his knee last season and had been rehabbing it all summer.

On the Toronto Maple Leafs …

Chris Johnston of Sportsnet: The Maple Leafs can send 2017 1st round draft pick Timothy Liljegren to the AHL if he doesn’t make the big club. Sending him back to Rogle of the Swedish league is also an option, but appears unlikely.

Benefits of assigning him to the Marlies of back to Rogle is that he’ll be close to monitor, they can control his usage, ice time, defense partners, and matchups as well as getting used to the smaller ice size.

On the New York Islanders …

Steve Zipay of Newsday: Gary Bettman doesn’t think the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum is a realistic option for the Islanders even on a tempory basis.

“Ultimately, whether or not the Islanders want to consider that and bring it to the league or something, you’ve had to ask them about it,” he said. “But my gut reaction is it’s not a viable option.”
