Flyers lose van Riemsdyk … They’ll have some goaltending questions soon
Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Daily News: Philadelphia Flyers lost forward James van Riemsdyk in the first period after taking a puck near his right knee. They will re-evaluate him when he returns to Philadelphia.
“He’s a big part of our team, a big body in our lineup,” center Sean Couturier said. “He’s a guy we want to see in our lineup.”
“I’m concerned he wasn’t able to come back,” coach Dave Hakstol said. “I don’t know the extent of it.”
Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post: The Flyers claimed goaltender Calvin Pickard earlier in the week. Brian Elliott is their starter to start the season. Michal Neuvirth still recovering from a suspected groin pull. Soon they will obviously have too many goaltenders.
“I don’t know what we’re gonna do,” Hextall said. “When the time comes we’ll see how things have shook out and make decisions when we have all the information.”
Goaltender Anthony Stolarz had cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL. Knee issues the past two years have hindered his development.
Crawford progressing
Mark Lazerus: Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said they are pleased with how Corey Crawford is progressing. Quenneville on how they will handle him: “We’ll watch him. Long-term, that’s the goal, is to get him playing. But we’ll see immediately how he’s playing.”
Johnson could be ready for their next game
Bryan Burns: Tampa Bay Lightning forward Tyler Johnson could be ready to return from his upper-body injury for their next game on Thursday.
Seidenberg and Gionta remain with the Islanders
Andrew Gross: Both Dennis Seidenberg and Stephen Gionta are both long-term insurance policies at this point according to coach Barry Trotz. They are on PTOs.
Hanzal takes part in their optional skate
Mark Stepneski: Dallas Stars forward Martin Hanzal skated with the team for their optional skate.
Luongo leaves with a leg injury
Corey Long of NHL.com: Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo left last night’s games with a lower-body injury.
“He had some ice on his knee and that’s as much as I know,” Panthers coach Bob Boughner said. “I knew he couldn’t come back and they’re going to reassess him and I’ll know more .”
Panthers teammates Mark Pysyk and Frank Vatrano collided into each other in front of Luongo and Vatrano landed on Luongo’s right leg.
