Thoughts from the media
Justin Bourne: “Wow, brilliant signing by the Sens. As a player there’s too much uncertainty out there to turn down that much money, even if he might be worth well more than that in a few years.”
John Matisz: “Sens lock up No. 1 defenceman and potential Norris Trophy contender. At $8M AAV, this is the smartest thing they’ve done in a looooong time.”
Dobber: “Wow! Look at the #Sens reading the tea leaves and knowing exactly where this would have gone next year. I can guarantee it would have expanded by another digit next summer.”
Todd Cordell: “Chabot is fantastic. This feels like a steal for the Senators.”
Ian Mendes: “This is the best possible news for the Sens fan base. A legitimate star player locked up for 8 years.”
David Pagnotta: “8x$8M. Not something the Sens wanted to wait on. Big move for them locking him up now”
Darren Dreger: “I think the Sens did great work here. $8mil is a chunk, but I’ve seen enough of Chabot to believe he’s going to be a star.”
Isabelle Khurshudyan: “Good move for Ottawa. He’s a stud.”
Joshua Clipperton: “Great news for a franchise that hasn’t had a lot of it in the last couple years.”
Cam Robinson: Highest paid defenders for 2020-21 season:
1) Erik Karlsson – 11.5M
2) Drew Doughty – 11M
3) PK Subban – 9M
4) OEL – 8.25M
5) Thomas Chabot – 8M
Sportsnet Stats: “With a cap hit of $8M, #Sens Thomas Chabot will be tied with Brent Burns, John Carlson & Jacob Trouba for the 5th-highest cap hit among defencemen for 2020-21.”
Cam Robinson: “Thomas Chabot has 135 NHL games under his belt.
First 64 games – 32 point pace.
Next 38 games – 82 point pace.
Final 32 games – 44 point pace
I get people thinking this COULD be a steal in a few years. I think it could also be a real overpay too.”

Chabot was OTT’s best DEF by WAR last year and his shot map shows an ability to bomb away from distance but the skating and offensive sense to get to the net and score as well.
Defenders peak around 24 y.o. so he’s probably got another level in him as well. You love to see it pic.twitter.com/TgJoEA4nbB

Thomas Chabot (22 y.o.) signs for 8 yrs X $8 mil/yr.
He’s an excellent young defender, who managed positive on-ice xG share, creates zone exits, facilitates offense for himself and his linemates, and can drag any partner up towards reasonable performance.https://t.co/OqgB8eJBlz pic.twitter.com/YTBIg7tqao— Sean Tierney (@ChartingHockey) September 19, 2019
The Ottawa Senators sign Thomas Chabot to a long-term deal. Chabot is an elite puck moving / offensive defenseman. Only Roman Josi & Erik Karlsson got the puck out of the defensive zone & into the offensive zone more than Chabot last season. #HotsamBatcho #Sens pic.twitter.com/GzjhJkEmmD
