Could the Predators Actually Move Stamkos and Marchessault?

Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Steve Kouleas and Nate Thompson and was asked about the Nashville Predators and whether Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault are tradeable.

Steve Kouleas: “It feels like the Ryan O’Reilly situation will happen with two years, four and a half handshake agreement, unless he really, really, really doesn’t want to go, and there’s a lot of natural fits, and his name has been battered about. I think you and I have talked about this in October, then in November, for sure. Is Stammer tradable? Realistically.”

NHL Rumors: The Nashville Predators and Steven Stamkos

Dave Pagnotta: “I think he is, if the Preds are willing to retain a significant chunk of that contract. I don’t get the sense that they want to eat half of his $8 million cap hit, but are they willing to bring him to the $6 million mark, or $5 million mark for another team?

I think the preference is too not. I think the preference is to just, if you’re moving Stamkos, or you’re moving him at his full pop, but I think there’d be a scenario if a team is willing to compensate for that, to lower that cap hit, I think both him (Stamkos) and  Marchessault, they’re willing to listen on.

I think Stamkos and Marchessault are both willing to waive to go to a top-tier contender, not just this season, but over the duration of both their contracts. And Stamkos got two years left after this year. Marchessault has three. But in Stamkos’s case, it’s going to be about the money and how much the Preds are willing, if at all, to retain on that, on that deal.

If they are, then I do think there are going to be creative ways of making that happen. If they’re not, then he’ll stick around, and they’ll look to move other guys on that roster, because they do have a number of pieces that are in play right now. Whether that’s Ryan O’Reilly, like you mentioned, or some other some, some other guys that are on pending or expiring contracts, pending UFA deals (Michael) Bunting, (Michael) McCarron, (Nick) Blankenburg, (Erik) Haula, etc.

NHL Rumors: Is Andrew Brunette on the Hot Seat in Nashville?

They’re likely to be a pretty active team here this season.”
