NHL Rumors I: Bruins and Oilers talking Whitney and more?

  • David Staples: Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe tweeted:

“Whitney to Bruins from EDM? Johnny Boychuk is an EDM homeboy. Andrew Ference another local…. Cost of a second-pairing defenseman? See Doug Murray (PIT). Pair of R2 picks….Whitney a PP force in his early days w/PIT. Question is, has he become the new-age Kaberle?…EDM played last 2 games in NSH and StL. Bruins without a scout at either game. But they know Whitney’s game…..Whitney would join a stronger backlline cast in Hub. Could be better fit with likes of Chara, Seidenberg and 19y0 Hamilton.”

Dupont responded to a reader, saying: “Discussed. Not done.”

  • Joe Haggerty: Whitney and forward heading to Boston with a number of possibilities. Magnus Paajarvi and Ales Hemsky were among the names. Darren Dreger: Oilers brass shot it down. Jason Gregor: Don’t see how Paajarvi to the Bruins works. Gregor doesn’t see who off of the Bruins roster they would give up for Paajarvi.
  • Bob McKenzie: There has been lots of talk about Oilers Ryan Whitney being traded to the Bruins. Bruins have done their due diligence on his health. As of now, he hasn’t been dealt, but there is no doubt they are trying to move him.
  • Jim Matheson: The Bruins would be perfect landing spot for Whitney. He was born in Boston. Went to Boston University. The Bruins didn’t scout the Oilers on their two game road trip in Nashville and St. Louis. The Bruins could be sniffing around Ales Hemsky. The Bruins may prefer Martin St. Louis, but that would be a bigger trade since his contract doesn’t expired at the end of the season. The Oilers may look for a draft pick and a young forward for Whitney. Jordan Caron’s name has come up. Despite being a former first round pick, he’s shown that he may be no better than a third or fourth liner. The Bruins also have Carl Soderberg. Goalie Niklas Svedberg is in the AHL and having a good season.
