On the Calgary Flames, Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau …
Kristen Odland of the Calgary Hearld: Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving said there is no update on contracts for RFAs Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau.
“No real update there,” said Flames general manager Brad Treliving, addressing the subject at a Wednesday news conference to introduce goaltender Brian Elliott to the local media. “We’ll continue to work away at it. We wanted to focus (Wednesday) on Brian and (Elliott’s wife) Amanda and welcome them to Calgary. But we’ll continue to work away at it.”
Talks continue and both are looking for long-term deals that could be between $6 million and $7.5 million per season range if using Vladimir Tarasenko, Filip Forsberg, Seth Jones, Aleksander Barkov, and Nathan MacKinnon as comparables.
“It’s just term and money, right?” joked Treliving, who remained tight-lipped (once again) about the subject. “July 1 (free agency) was probably the last time I saw everyone. We’re poking around and trying to see if there’s ways to make ourselves better. But there’s nothing imminent right now.
“We’ve obviously got Sean and Johnny’s contracts and we continue to work away at that. We’ll keep picking away at that.”
There are also no updates on Freddie Hamilton and Tyler Wotherspoon. Both received qualifying offers.
On the Detroit Red Wings …
Brendan Savage of MLive: The Red Wings are now about $4.8 million over the salary cap but will get LTIR relief from Johan Franzen ($3.9 million) and Joe Vitale ($1.16 million) who are both out with concussions. Teemu Pulkkinen ($812,500) had offseason shoulder surgery and won’t be ready to start the season.
“Certainly we have no expectations that Franzen and Vitale are playing hockey this year,” Holland told MLive Wednesday. “I talked to Vitale after we traded (for) him. He’s having on-going issues with concussion. He certainly not expecting to be in camp. I’m not expecting to see Johan Franzen on the ice.
“I think realistically, when it’s all said and done, we’re probably a little over the cap. What’s a little? Probably a million dollars or just a little bit less over the cap if you don’t count Vitale and Franzen.”
The Wings only remaining RFA is defenseman Ryan Sproul.
