The Montreal Canadiens won’t be taking a big swing leading up to the trade deadline

TSN: The Montreal Canadiens have cooled down of late, but still hold on to a wild-card spot. They added center Phillip Danault earlier in the year, and Pierre LeBrun doesn’t sense that there is any pressure for them to make another big addition before the deadline.

“I do think they’ll make a deal, but the point here is that they haven’t lost the bigger picture when it comes to them opening their window this year, keeping in mind that they’re the youngest team in the league.”

They’re still open to hockey trades, but they won’t be giving up long-term assets for a short-term gain. GM Kent Hughes will still be looking at the top-six market.

NHL Rumors: The Buffalo Sabres are Finally Able to Enter the Buyer’s Market

The Detroit Red Wings have two areas they’d like to upgrade

TSN: The Detroit Red Wings aren’t looking for rentals, according to Darren Dreger, and they’re remaining patient. They’re looking for a second-line center and a right-handed defenseman.

“They are looking for a number two centre, a player with term, and preferably a right-shot defenceman, again, with term.

When you look at what Detroit might be willing to part with, you have a look at their draft list. They’ve got a number of juicy picks that could be in play.”

NHL Rumors: The Utah Mammoth Won’t Mess Up Their Future

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Utah Mammoth aren’t true buyers

TSN: Chris Johnston says the Pittsburgh Penguins and Utah Mammoth would like to make the playoffs, and are currently in a spot to do so, but they aren’t really a true buyer.

“So, Kyle Dubas is still looking for young players, but not necessarily pivoting his approach after seeing his team go through Western Canada with a perfect record, putting itself into a playoff spot.

As for Utah, they’ve been patiently building up, acquiring draft picks and bringing prospects into their roster. But the biggest player they’re looking to add to their lineup here is Logan Cooley, who is getting closer and closer to return from injury.”
