Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: On Sunday February 25th, the day before the traded deadline, Senators forward Bobby Ryan thought he and defenseman Erik Karlsson were being traded to a Western Conference team.
“I heard on Sunday it was done and somebody backed out at the last second,” Ryan said Monday morning at BB&T Center. “Karl and I were like, ‘pack it up’. We thought we were gone. That’s just the way it goes. Then you’re like, I’ve got to move again?
“I guess I’ll just wait and see how it goes in the summer. That’s all you can do.”
How close they actually were to being traded, only Senators GM Pierre Dorion knows for sure.
Trade talks involving Ryan and Karlsson will likely happen again before the draft.
Ryan has four years left at a $7.25 million cap hit the Senators will be trying to package the two together again.
“I understand with my contract and the obligations, that I haven’t performed up to a $7-million player,” he said. “But that’s something that happens. That’s the business side of things. I try to separate it when I get to the rink. I don’t worry about what’s going on over there, in the other hallway, I just worry about what’s in front of me. That’s all you can do.”
Ryan spoke to his agent on the Friday before the trade deadline who told him that a trade was possible.
Shawn Simpson: “When a player has news about a potential trade. That information usually comes from his agent. And in the case of Ryan & Newport sports, it’s almost always very factual and accurate.”
Shawn Simpson: “Big problem for Sens on and off the ice right now, is the control of information. No team has had more information leaked to very credible sources in the hockey world. It’s virtually impossible to build a good team or business in this environment.”
