On the Ottawa Senators …
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: It would take a really good offer for the Senators to trade their No. 12 pick.
“For us to move away from No. 12, it will take a significant trade,” said Dorion, who attended the NHL’s board meeting with Senators owner Eugene Melnyk on Wednesday. “I doubt it. That’s why I say if I had to bet, I’d bet on No. 12.”
The Senators are looking for a third pairing defenseman and are interested in trading Patrick Wiercioch and Alex Chiasson.
On the New York Rangers …
Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers could be looking at a “reset” with GM Jeff Gorton needing to trade trade two or three of his better players to do so – Rick Nash, Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider and Kevin Klein.
One source said that Gorton “is juggling about a half-dozen balls in the air.” Changing their bottom-six or third pairing isn’t going to be enough.
If the Rangers would be required to take a bad contract or pay a part of Rick Nash’s salary, they shouldn’t move him.
Moving Nash or Stepan’s contracts just to be able to bid on Steven Stamkos doesn’t make sense unless he’s willing to take a discount.
The Rangers aren’t interested in trading for Kevin Shattenkirk and giving him a six-year, $42 million contract that it might take to re-sign him.
If the Rangers trade Stepan, they would need to bring back another top-line center – maybe Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Would the Avs be interested in Stepan and be willing to include Matt Duchene in a deal?
Brooks wonders if the Hurricanes would move Justin Faulk in a trade for Kreider?
Would the Wild trade Matt Dumba in a deal involving Kreider and Klein or Dylan McIlrath?
What about Stepan and Klein for Mikael Granlund or Charlie Coyle and Dumba or Jonas Brodin?
