On the Toronto Maple Leafs …
Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: There have been reports that the Maple Leafs are interested in Detroit Red Wings center Luke Glendening. Coach Mike Babcock could be hoping to add the checking center. He signed a four-year contract with a $1.8 million cap hit last offseason.
The Red Wings would likely want prospects or draft picks. Matt Martin‘s name would likely come up as he’s from Windsor, but he doesn’t have a good contract.
The Maple Leafs are believed to be looking for depth on the blue line. There are Ian Cole or Matt Hunwick rumors. There is also the rumor that the Penguins could go after Tyler Bozak to play with Phil Kessel.
On Ilya Kovalchuk and Brian Gionta …
Kevin Allen of USA Today: A solid showing by Ilya Kovalchuk at the Olympics could help show teams that he could still be top goal scorer. In his past 113 KHL games he has 63 goals and recorded 141 points.
If John Tavares re-signs with the New York Islanders, Kovalchuk could be an interesting fit. Other potentials options/fits include Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Brian Gionta has shown so far in the Olympics that he still has some quickness and ability to get things done. Could be a role player for a playoff team.
