The Chicago Blackhawks have traded Teuvo Teravainen and Bryan Bickell to the Carolina Hurricanes for a 2016 2nd round pick (NY Rangers pick – # 50) and a 2017 3rd round pick (NY Rangers pick).
Hurricanes GM Ron Francis.
“This deal allowed us to use some of our collected draft picks to improve our group of forwards for the coming season by added two Stanley Cup champions,” said Francis. “Teuvo is a young, highly-skilled player still on his entry-level contract who is coming off of a strong first full NHL season, and Bryan is a veteran who has experienced great success in his career. Both players give our organization more options and flexibility among the forward ranks.”
Some thoughts from the media …
Cap Friendly: “This trade clears up $4,894,167 cap space for @NHLBlackhawks”
Cap Friendly: “After trade #Hurricanes have a projected cap hit of 45M with a roster size of 17 players.”
Corey Pronman: “Chicago was hoping to offer an arm to get rid of the Bickell contract and Carolina insisted on a lung. Chicago isn’t devoid of on the cusp fwds (Hinostroza, Hartman, Schmaltz, McNeill) and Teuvo hasn’t killed it, but latter has top-end upside.
Ken Campbell: “When I see trades like the Chi-Car one today, more convinced salary cap accomplishes nothing and creates more problems than it solves.”
Scott Powers: “Bickell’s contract basically cost the Blackhawks Saad & Teravainen. The trade likely allows them to re-sign Shaw & ensure Panarin’s deal.”
Dan Rosen: “So basically instead of buying out Bickell, Chicago found a taker for him. The price: Teravainen. Tough price to pay for a bad contract.”
Mike Halford: “Skinner, Hanifin, Faulk, Teravainen, Lindholm, Rask, Pesce, Slavin are all 24 or younger. Aho (18) & Saarela (19) on way. Francis doin work”
Thomas Drance: “With the Krueger deal and Panarin’s emergence (and Schmaltz in the pipeline), it was becoming hard to see where Teravainen fit long-term.”
DJ Bean: “That Bickell trade is a pretty convincing argument against the “sign the players, worry about it later” philosophy.”
Brian Hedger: “It was either going to be Shaw and Bickell packaged or Teuvo/Bickell. Now #Blackhawks will almost certainly sign Shaw.”
Andrew Berkshire: “Trading teravainen to keep shaw is lol”
