The Ottawa Senators have traded center Matt Duchene and Julius Bergman to the Columbus Blue Jackets for winger Vitaly Abramov, winger Jonathan Davidsson, a 2019 first round pick (top 3 protected) and a conditional 2020 first round pick if Duchene re-signs.
- If the 2019 first-round pick ends up in the top three, the Senators will get the Blue Jackets 2020 first round pick.
- The conditional 2020 first round pick if Duchene were to re-sign would then become a conditional 2021 first round pick.
The 28-year old Duchene was drafted 3rd overall in the first round of the 2009 draft by the Colorado Avalanche. He carries a $6 million salary cap hit.
The 23-year old Bergman was drafted 46th overall in the second round of the 2014 draft by the San Jose Sharks. He carries a $863,333 cap hit.
The 20-year old Abramov was drafted 65th overall in the third round of the 2016 draft by the Blue Jackets. He carries a $730,833 salary cap hit.
The 21-year old Davidson was drafted 170th overall in the sixth round of the 2017 draft by the Blue Jackets.
Thoughts from the media
Darren Dreger: “Duchene said to be excited about trade to CBJ. No extension talk at this time. Belief is the Blue Jackets are loading up for playoffs.”
Nick Kypreos: “Hearing Duchene happy to play the role of the rental but as of now no talk about any contract extension between @BlueJacketsNHL and Duchene. Things could change but early indication is Panarin will not be traded in hopes of a long playoff run.”
Matt Larkin: “What’s fascinating is that, assuming the Duchene deal means keeping Panarin too, Jackets essentially take two of the top three trade chips away from their competitors.”
Michael Traikos: “Adding Duchene — and keeping Panarin — would send a strong message to Blue Jackets fans. But not sure it’s enough to get past Washington or Pittsburgh.”
Aaron Portzline: “A week ago, word around the league is that Matt Duchene would not sign long-term with #CBJ, but apparently that stance has changed in recent days”
Mike Kelly: “Matt Duchene will be a great fit in Columbus. The Jackets create a lot of offence from low in the zone and by cycling. High offensive zone possession team. Duchene protects the puck well, is dynamic and gives them a great 1,2 punch at centre with Dubois.”
Ryan Wagman: “Per the @mckeenshockey pre-season list, Abramov and Davidsson were the #2 and #10 ranked prospects in Columbus. Abramov has struggled in his pro debut in the AHL, but Davidsson is doing well in Sweden.”
Ryan Wagman: “Apparently, Julius Bergman is also going to Columbus. We had him 19th in the Ottawa system. Looks like just a contract changing hands, as he has regressed since his time in the OHL. Am not a fan”
Jokke Nevalainen: “Abramov and Davidsson are both really good prospects. Bemström’s big season had made it possible to trade both of them.”
Rob Mixer: “The Blue Jackets have been after Matt Duchene for years. It appears Jarmo Kekalainen finally got his guy.”
Travis Yost:“Abramov has 22 points in 52 games. Turning 21 in May..”
Cap Friendly: “As we wait for the details on a Matt Duchene to Columbus trade, it will be interesting to see what the #Sens get in return. Here’s what Ottawa gave up last season to acquire Duchene from COL.

Cam Robinson: “It takes some serious guts to be buyers in CBJ’s position. Sitting outside the playoff picture and most likely to see Bob and Panarin walk for nothing in the offseason. Shoot your shot, I suppose.”
