The St. Louis Blues have traded forward Robby Fabbri to the Detroit Red Wings for forward Jacob de la Rose.

The 23-year old was drafted 21st overall in the first-round of 2014 NHL draft by the Blues. He carries a $900,000 cap hit and will be a RFA at the end of the season.

The 24-year old was drafted 34th overall in the second-round of the 2013 draft by the Canadiens. He carries a $900,000 cap hit and will be a RFA at the end of the season.

Jeremy Rutherford: Fabbri after hearing he was traded to the Red Wings: “I thought my game was coming back. I just didn’t get the opportunity I was hoping for to help push myself to get back to where I was. I’m excited to use this fresh start to do that.”

Thoughts from the media

Andy Strickland: “Wish the best for Robbie Fabbri, hasn’t been an easy ride. Hoping he can return to level that made him a 1st round pick and one of the top players in the #OHL. Had a real impressive rookie season but injuries set him back. Change of scenery might be best.”

Lou Korac: “I’ve always had candid interviews with Fabbri, before injuries and after. We stay biased when covering athletes but I was pulling for him to pull through his injuries and get his game back. Too bad. But it just wasn’t happening here. He had such promise pre-injuries.”

Dan Rosen: “I understand this from the Blues perspective seeing that Fabbri didn’t really have a significant enough role anymore, but this could be a sneaky good trade for the Red Wings by Steve Yzerman. Fabbri has talent. The injuries de-railed him in St. Louis. He should play in Detroit.”

John Shannon: “Steve Yzerman trying everything he can to change the Red Wings’ roster…Erne, Perlini, Fabbri all join the Winged Wheel to help team, and re-kindle their careers.”

Ted Kulfan: “Fabbri has intriguing talent, has had decent offensive seasons, but has been injury-prone. If he’s healthy, he’s worth the gamble for sure.”

Ryan Wagman: “Jacob De La Rose, a prospect whose game I liked was traded straight up for Rabby Fabbri, a prospect whose game I LOVED. Stock of both was down. Fabbri from injuries, JDLR from lack of offense. Great opportunity for Fabbri in Detroit.”

Tony Ferrari: “Detroit Red Wings fans just witnessed the first Jedi move by Steve Yzerman. What a deal. Even if Fabbri isn’t healthy, trading Jacob de la Rose for him is a no brainer.”

Sean Tierney: “Anyway, if you’ve been watching the shot-blocking, quality-preventing style Berube’s used since last yr, JDLR is not a surprising target and Fabbri is not a surprising casualty. It’s not an inspired move for STL and it’s the kind of move DET should be making in a tank year.”

On one hand, Fabbri’s not been good in his 80 mins of TOI this season.
On the other hand, De La Rose has been bad or dull in his 165 mins of TOI.

Seems like a coach making a decision that he just won’t play a player. With the Steen injury tonight, a shot blocking fwd was needed. pic.twitter.com/RFsuFASFmM

Josh Tessler: “If Robby Fabbri can stay healthy, the Detroit Red Wings got an absolute steal. In his rookie season, he had 37 pts in 72 games while averaging 13 min a night. That is pretty solid. Jacob de la Rose is a fringe player. So.. getting Fabbri for him is a solid move by Yzerman.”
