The St. Louis Blues trade pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk and goaltender Pheonix Copley to the Washington Capitals for a 2017 1st round pick, conditional 2019 2nd round pick, forward Zach Sanford and forward Brad Malone.
Craig Custance: If the Capitals extend Shattenkirk or if they make it to the 3rd round of the playoffs, and he plays in 50 percent of the games, the Blues get a 2019 2nd round pick.
Elliotte Friedman: If the Capitals trade his rights before the start of free agency, the Blues get a 7th round pick. If the Capitals trade his rights after the season, and should they get a 4th round pick or earlier, then the Blues get a draft pick two rounds after the pick the Capitals get. Ie. if the Capitals get a 3rd for him, then the Blues get a fifth
Craig Custance: The Blues are retaining 39 percent of Shattenkirk’s salary.
Shattenkirk is expected to be in the Capitals lineup tomorrow.
The 28-year old Shattenkirk was drafted 14th overall in the 2007 draft by the Avalanche. Shattenkirk carries a $4.25 million cap hit.
The 25-year old Copley was undrafted.
The 22-year old Sanford was drafted 61st overall in the 2nd round of the 2013 draft by the Capitals.
The 27-year old Malone was drafted 105th overall in the 4th round of the 2007 draft by the Avalanche.
Thoughts from the media …
Andy Strickland: “Sanford, big center who will compliment Tage Thompson down the road”
Tom Gulitti: “Sanford was a center at BC, but has been playing wing with Capitals and in Hershey since training camp. Can still be a center for Blues”
Renaud Lavoie: “Kevin Shattenkirk will finish his season in Washington. Expect the Rangers to make a push for him on July 1st.”
Craig Custance: “I know Capitals fans are rightfully cautious but they should be really excited about this trade and the what’s shaping up for this team.”
Mike Kelly: “Shattenkirk, 19th in puck possession / game (2:01), joins 3rd best possession team in NHL, Caps (18:26). 4th in points amongst D-men (42).”
Cap Friendly: “Shattenkirk’s $4.25M cap hit translates into $968K in projected cap space with 41 D left in the season. #Caps currently have $563K in space.”
Isabelle Khurshudyan: “MacLellan last week on D depth: “I think it concerns every team. I mean, nobody has five, six top-four defensemen.” Welp.”
Isabelle Khurshudyan: “MacLellan said he met with Backstrom and Ovechkin to get sense of how team felt. Ovi told him to go get someone. Backstrom told him not to.”
Nick Cotsonika: “Capitals already No. 1 in NHL standings, tied for second in goals per game, fifth on power play. Adding Shattenkirk?”
Nick Cotsonka: “I like going for it. I like keeping a player away from rivals. I wonder about screwing up chemistry when things are humming.”
Kevin Shattenkirk is a top-pair defender, both with personal offence and team impacts on offence and defence. Power-play scoring unreal. pic.twitter.com/nff4gEBkxT
