The Boston Bruins have traded defenseman Adam McQuaid to the New York Rangers for defenseman Steven Kampfer, a 2019 fourth-round pick, and a conditional 2019 seventh-round pick.

The 31-year old McQuaid was drafted 55th overall in the 2nd round of the 2005 draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. He carries a $2.75 million salary cap hit.

The 29-year old Kampfer was drafted 93rd overall in the 4th round of the 2007 draft by the Anaheim Ducks. He carries a $650,000 salary cap hit.

Thoughts from the media

Joe Haggerty: “Adam McQuaid traded to the New York Rangers for old friend Steve Kampfer,a fourth round pick and a conditional 7th rounder. It’s debatable how much he was going to play this year, but Bruins lose a tough, tough hombre and a great teammate.”

Nicholas Goss: “Trading Adam McQuaid should free up some ice time for younger Bruins defensemen, of which there are many.”

Jonathan Willis: “Just think about NYR will be selling at the deadline (probably with salary retention): a tough 3rd pair RD with ~500 games of NHL experience and a Cup ring. That’s catnip for GMs.”

Brian Compton: “Love the acquisition for the Rangers. McQuaid is tough, will be good in the room for the younger D.”

Bill Comeau: “Adam McQuaid’s SKATR profile. On an elite “corsi team”, Adam struggled to keep up despite facing low competition in the third pair. The key to this profile is his relative to teammate percentiles – bottom 4 % for RelT xGF%, 14th percentile for Rel T CF% in 2017-18.”

Micah McCurdy: “Adam McQuaid, traded to NYR, is a third-pair defender.”
