The Calgary Flames have traded forward Hunter Shinkaruk to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Kerby Rychel.
The 23-year old Shinkaruk was drafted 24th overall in the first round of the 2013 NHL draft by the Vancouver Canucks. Shinkaruk is a restricted free agent.
The 23-year old Rychel was drafted 19th overall in the first round of the 2013 NHL draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Rychel is a restricted free agent.
Some thoughts from the media
Pat Steinberg: “Calgary was close to not qualifying Shinkaruk in June but opted to go ahead. He was also looking at options in Europe, so was pretty clear Shinkaruk was not long for the organization.”
Kristen Anderson: “A minor league exchange for the #Flames that sends forward Hunter Shinkaruk to the Montreal Canadiens for Kerby Rychel. Shinkaruk had been spinning his wheels in the organization since they picked him up in the Markus Granlund deal in 2016.”
Andrew Berkshire: “I think Rychel is a slightly better bet than Shinkaruk overall, but it’s a depth move of two players that aren’t likely to make an impact.”
Cap Friendly: “Both players are un-signed RFA’s who require waivers to be loaned to the minors”
