On the Philadelphia Flyers, Brayden Schenn and Brandon Manning …
Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: The Flyers and Brayden Schenn avoided salary arbitration Monday and agreed to a four-year, $20.5 million deal. GM Ron Hextall said they overpaid upfront, but was “fair” for the last two years.
“We took a higher cap hit for the first two years and essentially a lower hit than we would have taken in Years 3 and 4 if we piece meal it together,” Hextall said.
Schenn rejected the Flyers two-year offer with a $4.3 million cap hit.
“The benefit for us is our cap number stays flat for four years rather than having have a cap at a lower number, then taking a run at him for two years, if in fact he’d sign for two years at a higher cap number,” Hextall said.
The Flyers currently have 14 forwards, with Jordan Weal being sent to the AHL as the likely option. Scott Laughton is another option.
Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post: Hextall on a conference call on Monday after the Schenn signing.
“Without question we would have had a lower award for two years,” Hextall said in a conference call, “but then you only have the player for two years. Then all of a sudden he’s an (unrestricted free agent) at 26 years old and that would have been an issue.”
Tim Wharnsby: Brandon Manning settled on a two-year deal with the Flyers. He will make $950,000 this season and $1 million in 2017-18.
General Fanager: The Flyers have an estimated $1.04 million in salary cap space with 23 players under contract – 14 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies.
