Canucks trade Biega to the Red Wings
Rick Dhaliwal: The Vancouver Canucks have traded defenseman Alex Biega to the Detroit Red Wings for winger David Pope.
The Red Wings were one of the teams that showed some interest in Biega when he was placed on waivers last week.
Ben Kuzma: Canucks GM Jim Benning on Biega: “I drafted Alex when I was in Buffalo, so we go way back. He was good for our younger players to do the work and I gave him my word that we were moving on from him, but if I could find a spot in the league for him, I would try to work that out.”
Ben Kuzma: “Pope, 25, LW, split last season between AHL/ECHL. Spent four years at University Nebraska-Omaha and four in BCHL. Fourth-round Detriot pick in 2013, has not played NHL regular-season game. On expiring two-way contract ($925K, $70K).”
Devils add a defenseman
Cap Friendly: The New Jersey Devils signed defenseman Joe Morrow to a one-year, two-way contract. Morrow had been in the New York Rangers training camp on a PTO.
He’ll get $700,000 in the NHL, $250,000 in the minors, with $300,000 guaranteed.
Capitals roster moves
Capitals PR: The Washington Capitals have put Travis Boyd on waivers.
Isabelle Khurshudyan: “After consulting with the brilliant @CapFriendly, here’s a breakdown of what happened today.
*deep breath* Kuznetsov comes back on the Caps’ books *today* and will eat up $7,632,258 in cap space. The four days he missed basically saved Caps $168K.”
That means they were still missing $669,661 to activate Kuznetsov. For that reason, they placed Boyd on waivers, and once he clears/gets reassigned to Hershey or gets claimed, Caps will have plenty of space.
But because Caps have to activate Kuznetsov today and Boyd won’t clear (or be claimed) until noon tomorrow, they sent Siegenthaler down for one day in order to clear the missing space required until tomorrow, at which point Siegenthaler will be recalled.”
Trotz moving up the coaches all-times games list
Andrew Gross: New York Islanders coach Barry Trotz coached his 1,608th NHL game over the weekend. He passed former Islanders coach Al Arbour for third place all-time.
