NHL Rumors and Notes: Leafs, Versteeg, Kreider and Moore

The Toronto Maple Leafs put Peter Holland on waivers

On the Toronto Maple Leafs …

James Mirtle: The Maple Leafs have put Peter Holland on waivers today. He has an arbitration hearing on Monday.

James Mirtle: Don’t think that Holland will be back with the Maple Leafs next year. He’ll either get claimed off waivers or the Leafs move him after arbitration. Another option could be that if they can’t move him, they could buyout the arbitration award. This can only happen if the award is huge, though it’s unlikely. The Leafs will be in an awkward spot if Holland wins in arbitration.

Alec Brownscombe: Holland on waivers seems mostly cap related. If he’s not claimed and goes to arbitration – if he gets a one-way deal as opposed to a two-way deal, and using $1.5 million as a salary example, only $950,000 can be buried in the AHL if he doesn’t make the team. The Leafs don’t have a lot of cap space if they don’t want to use LTIR relief because of all the potential bonuses that they may have to pay out.

On Kris Versteeg …

Darren Dreger: Kris Versteeg is expected to sign with Bern in the Swiss League sometime this weekend.

On Chris Kreider …

Steve Zipay: Kreider’s new deal reportedly has a limited no-trade clause in the final two years of the four year deal.

Larry Brooks: Was told that Kreider was insisting on a four year contract as opposed to a five year deal. This is why the cap hit is lower than Kyle Palmieri‘s. Kreider will be a UFA one year earlier, though it could be a lockout year.

On Dominic Moore …

Luke Fox of Sportsnet: Dominic Moore said he has contract offers on the table, but he’s looking for the right one.

“The free agency period goes in fits and starts. Things open up and close along the way. You just try to be proactive but patient. You also don’t want to put yourself in the wrong spot, so you wait to find the right fit, the right role,” Moore explains.

“You want to be on a good team that has a great chance to win but you also want to have a responsibility, some value on that team. It’s about marrying all of those factors and making the best decision.”
