- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli on flirting with salary cap danger.
“When you’re in the position of success that we’ve had, players get to an age where they’re commanding, based on their years of service, big salaries, then you have to make tough decisions,” said Chiarelli. “We push it. We pushed it last year. We made a bet that at the end of the day didn’t work out, but we wanted to win last year.
“So we pushed it and we’ll continue to push it. To push it like the way we do, we know that we’re going to have make all the right decisions. But if you look at all the teams that win, they are in the same boat. We want to maximize our resources. We’ve got the commitment from ownership to do it, and we’re going to continue to do it. You need to be proactive, and make the decisions. Sometimes they’re not always going to be popular, but we feel that when we do that we’re making the right decisions.”
Moveable Bruins defensemen for some cap space and possibly a cheap right winger: Adam McQuaid, Matt Bartkowski, Johnny Boychuk and David Warsofsky. Boychuk would net the most cap space ($3.36 million) and biggest return. Could the Bruins package Boychuk and another piece(s) for someone like Nail Yakupov, Jakob Silfverberg or Tomas Tatar?
The Bruins could trade Bartkowski or McQuaid for a draft pick or prospect.
- Joe McDonald: Chiarelli on potential trades: said that he has some things that he is looking and will see what happens during training camp.
- Matt Kalman: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli on Torey Krug and Reilly Smith: “I want them to be part of this team and I want them obviously to have a full camp. In my tenure here we’ve never had anyone not attend. But that doesn’t mean that they won’t.”
- Joe Haggerty: Chiarelli on getting Krug and Smith signed before the start of camp: “We hope so. We want them to be a part of the team.”
