Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Bruins GM Don Sweeney said that he’s keeping the door open for potential free agent defensemen.
“You always want to have the best group that you can possibly have. There’s probably an element of unknown because we have some guys that are going to push , and we have waiver decisions…certain decisions that are going to impact the decision overall. There are a couple of free agents that we’re still having conversations with that feel might improve our club if the financial component works,” said Sweeney. “I’m not going to stop having those conversations because it might end up being the right thing to do. Matt Irwin helps provide a lot of depth to our overall grouping, and had a very good year last year while providing some offense to our group.”
Free agent options could include: Cody Franson (likely too expensive), Marek Zidlicky, and Christian Ehrhoff. The Bruins have about $4 million in cap space, so they could add a veteran on a one-year deal. The Bruins could look to move one of their defenseman if they bring in an established defenseman via free agency or trade.

“There are still players out there that may fit,” he said. “You have conversations with agents about possibilities, and I think we’re comfortable with where we are in creating internal competition, but I’m not going to stop sort of asking in areas we can continue to look at.”
