The Devils must now make some moves

Darren Dreger via twitter: The NHL has until September 17th to fine the New Jersey Devils for Kovalchuk’s first contract.

Daniel Tolensky via twitter: Tolensky wonders if David Clarkson could be available. He signed a 3 year $8 million deal with only 82 points in last 3 seasons. Brian Rolston could be tough to move since he is owed $10 million over the next 2 seasons, and hasn’t scored over 20 goals, 37 points in the last 2 season. Dainius Zubrus could be hard to move as well, he’s owed$10.2 million over 3 years, and had only 10 goals and 27 points last year.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: A league source has said the only way the Devils will be able to move someone (Rolston, Salvadore, or Zubrus) would be to package it with a high draft pick(s). Sources are saying Lamoriello doesn’t really want to give up picks, and has quietly been shopping Travis Zajac.

Mark Everson of the NY Post: Lou has until the first day of the season to get below the cap. Salvadore ($2.9 million) and Zubrus ($3.4 million) are likely candidates. Patrik Elias has a no-movement clause, and the following have a no-trade clause: Brian Rolston, Jamie Langenbrunner, Jason Arnott, Colin White, Anton Volchenkov, Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg. Travis Zajac’sew  name has come up in rumors because teams may not be willing to take on a Zubrus or Salvadore. The Devils may turn to Avalanche (still under the cap floor), Thrashers, Blues, Hurricanes, Coyotes, Panthers, Lightning, Stars, Ducks, Predators or the  Kings, as they all have cap room of $9 million or more.
