The 24-year-old Finn led the Ducks in defenseman scoring for the second straight year, but is likely the odd man out in Anaheim since they are unlikely to pay big money to both Vatanen and 2012 top pick Hampus Lindholm.
The Ducks also have a pair of top blueline prospects in Shea Theodore and Brandon Montour pushing for a spot on the NHL roster. Anaheim’s early exit and their pressing need to add help up front after struggling to score in the first half and losing to Nashville in the first round, could be addressed by swapping Vatanen for forward help.
