2026-27 Edmonton Oilers Top Prospects

Isaac Howard – Howard is one of Edmonton’s highest-upside prospects and is widely viewed as a player who could challenge for NHL minutes quickly. He arrives with major offensive pedigree after winning the Hobey Baker Award, and Edmonton’s current prospect rankings put him near the top of the system. The main selling point is his scoring ability and creativity; the key question is how quickly that offense translates against NHL competition.

Beau Akey – Akey is a talented right-shot defenseman whose development has been slowed by injuries, but he still profiles as one of Edmonton’s better blue-line prospects. The organization sees him as a player with enough skill and mobility to become a useful NHL defender if he can stay healthy and stack pro games. He is still more of a projection than a finished product, but his upside keeps him in the upper tier of the pool.

Quinn Hutson – Hutson is an intelligent, offensive-minded winger whose best attributes are his scoring instincts, constant movement, quick release, and ability to find open space without needing to dominate possession. He plays with a strong motor and anticipates offensive opportunities well, which helped him develop into a productive scorer at Boston University before signing with Edmonton. His weaknesses are primarily his average physical tools, defensive consistency, puck protection, and skating ceiling.

Tommy LaFreniere – Lafrenière is a high-motor, two-way center who combines strong hockey sense, relentless forechecking, defensive responsibility, and an increasingly dangerous offensive game. He excels at retrieving pucks, attacking the interior of the ice and creating opportunities through effort and anticipation, while his quick release became a much bigger weapon as he broke out for 41 goals and 77 points with Kamloops in 2025–26.

Samuel Jonsson – Jonsson is a towering 6-foot-5 goaltender whose game is built around size, positioning, patience, and efficient movement in the crease. He covers a significant amount of the net without needing to overreact, tracks the puck well through traffic, controls rebounds effectively, and possesses a quick glove for a goaltender of his size. In 2025–26, he went 21-8-2 with a 2.38 goals-against average, .910 save percentage, and five shutouts for ECHL Fort Wayne.
