The 2026–27 NHL season begins Sept. 29, and early playoff futures have already separated established contenders from the teams fighting for the final few berths. The middle of the board offers the most intrigue, especially in a league where one hot goalie, a healthy top line or a three-week skid can change the wild-card race.
Boston owns one of the most striking early prices. The Bruins opened as a clear underdog to return to the playoffs despite a 100-point 2025–26 season. That disconnect makes them one of the league’s most fascinating teams entering training camp.

Pastrnak remains one of hockey’s elite scorers. McAvoy can control games from the blue line when healthy. Swayman gives Boston a chance to win low-scoring games even when the offense sputters.
The concern is depth. Boston cannot rely on Pastrnak to drive its attack every night, and the club needs more consistent secondary scoring. Its second line must create pressure. Its bottom six must win shifts. The power play also needs to stay productive when games tighten.
The Atlantic Division gives Boston little margin for error. Florida, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Buffalo all enter the season with credible playoff expectations. The Bruins may need 45 or more wins to avoid relying on the wild-card tiebreakers.
Boston’s season could swing on its start. A strong first two months would make the current playoff price look overly pessimistic. A slow offensive start could bury the Bruins in a crowded division before the holidays.
Buffalo Sabres Must Defend Their Breakthrough
Buffalo enters 2026–27 as one of the NHL’s toughest teams to project. The Sabres won their division in 2025–26, yet the early market still does not treat them as a secure playoff club. That tells the story. The league respects Buffalo’s talent, but it wants proof that last season was more than a one-year surge.
The Sabres have enough high-end players to remain in the race. Their division title showed they can handle the pressure of meaningful games. They also proved they could win consistently during the regular season rather than merely flash potential.
Now comes the harder task. Buffalo must build on that season while facing stronger expectations and a tougher target on its back. Opponents will take the Sabres more seriously. Every slump will receive more attention. Every injury will carry more weight.
The biggest question is whether Buffalo can avoid regression. Teams that break through often face a difficult follow-up year, especially if special teams decline or goaltending becomes unstable. The Sabres need a reliable five-on-five game because the Atlantic offers too many skilled teams to survive long stretches of loose play.
Buffalo has a playoff-caliber ceiling. It also has a realistic path to missing the postseason if its scoring depth or defensive structure slips. That makes the Sabres a classic borderline team even after a division-winning year.
The West Has Its Own Bubble Race
The Western Conference carries a different set of questions. Minnesota, Utah, Los Angeles, Anaheim, and San Jose all fall within a broad competitive range. Chicago remains further from the playoff line, but the Blackhawks could still make meaningful progress behind Connor Bedard.
Bedard remains the centerpiece of Chicago’s rebuild. The Blackhawks should be better than the 72-point team that finished near the bottom of the West last season. But improvement and playoff qualification are different goals. Chicago still needs more consistency, more defensive reliability, and more scoring beyond its young star.
The Central Division will not make that climb easy. Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, and Winnipeg all create difficult matchups, and the wild-card race could again force teams into a points pace near the mid-90s. Chicago needs a major jump to enter that conversation.
Utah is one of the more interesting teams in the West. The Mammoth have the talent to push into the playoff mix, but they need to turn promise into results across 82 games. Their young core can create offense, yet the club must show it can defend leads and withstand the schedule’s tougher stretches.
Anaheim carries similar volatility. The Ducks reached the 2026 playoffs after a long rebuild, but their defensive turnover creates risk. Leo Carlsson gives Anaheim a legitimate offensive building block, though the team must replace experience on the blue line.
The Ducks can stay in the race if their young forwards take another step and their goaltending remains steady. Their ceiling is high enough to surprise. Their floor is low enough to miss by a wide margin if injuries or defensive breakdowns hit early.
Los Angeles also remains difficult to place. The Kings have veteran experience and a proven defensive identity, but they need more offense to keep pace in the Pacific Division. Vegas and Edmonton set a demanding standard, while Utah and Anaheim can make the wild-card chase more crowded.
Prices Will Change Quickly
Early playoff odds reward teams with established stars, dependable goaltending, and recent postseason success. They punish clubs with thin depth, unsettled blue lines, or a difficult divisional path. That explains why Boston, Buffalo, Anaheim, and Utah stand out before the season begins.
Boston has the clearest case to outperform its early price because of its core. Buffalo has the hardest projection because it must validate a division-winning campaign. Anaheim and Utah bring more volatility, but both have enough young talent to change the Western Conference picture.
Training camp will sharpen the projections. A major injury, an unresolved contract, or an unexpected rookie can shift a playoff number quickly. For now, the NHL’s borderline teams offer the best indication of how difficult the 2026–27 playoff race could become.
