2026 NHL Offseason: Larkin, Nurse, and a Wild Market

The 2026 NHL offseason has turned into a pressure point for several franchises. Two established core players have requested trades, multiple teams face cap squeezes, and a key coaching hire in Los Angeles signals an aggressive push in the Pacific.

Dylan Larkin wants out of Detroit. Darnell Nurse has asked to be traded from Edmonton. Both decisions reshape the trade market months before opening night. Layer in a deep free-agent class and a loaded draft at the top, and front offices face a short window to define their direction. For fans and bettors tracking every development, tools like the 1xBet mobile app make it easier to follow odds swings and transaction news in real time.

Larkin And Nurse Shake Up The Trade Board

Reports earlier this month confirmed that Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade after 11 seasons in Detroit. He holds a full no-trade clause through next season, which gives him significant control over his destination. Detroit has made the playoffs just once in its tenure, and the combination of limited progress and a firm contract structure pushed the situation to a breaking point.

League insiders have linked several teams to Larkin, including Minnesota, Vegas, and Florida, as clubs with both interest and assets to make a serious offer. Minnesota’s name surfaces often because the Wild need a true top-line center and have a mix of prospects and picks that could appeal to Detroit. The Red Wings, however, do not face a forced timeline. With Larkin under contract and holding leverage, general manager Steve Yzerman can wait for a package that fits both short- and long-term goals.

In Edmonton, Nurse’s future has become a separate but equally important storyline. The veteran defenseman has reportedly told the Oilers he is open to a move and provided a list of three to five teams he would consider. Nurse carries a full no-trade clause through 2027 and a $9.25 million cap hit through 2029–30, making any deal complex. Edmonton had already explored options before the request, and now both sides seem aligned on a fresh start.

Early reporting has connected Nurse to teams that need a workhorse left-shot defender and can absorb a big contract with term. Pittsburgh and Los Angeles are among the clubs mentioned as realistic fits. Any trade would likely require salary retention or money headed back to Edmonton, but Nurse’s minutes, physical game, and experience still carry value for contenders.

Laviolette Hire Signals Kings’ Intent

Los Angeles answered one major question early by hiring Peter Laviolette as head coach on a three-year deal. He replaces D.J. Smith, who finished last season as interim after Jim Hiller’s dismissal. Laviolette brings more than two decades of NHL head coaching experience and a reputation for getting results quickly with veteran cores.

The Kings struggled to score last season and slipped to the bottom third of the league in goals per game and power-play efficiency. Management made it clear the team needed a more aggressive offensive mindset while maintaining structure. Laviolette has preached an attack-oriented style in previous stops and has already talked about pushing pace and creating more high-danger chances.

His arrival almost guarantees Los Angeles will look to add scoring and possibly a top-four defenseman. With Drew Doughty turning 37 in December and the club still trying to maximize its current window, the Kings are projected to be buyers. If they explore the Nurse market or pursue other high-end blue-liners, Laviolette’s presence and track record with veteran groups could become a selling point.

Free Agency, Cap Squeeze, and Goalie Watch

The 2026 free-agent class is not stacked with MVP-level stars, but it includes a long list of useful pieces who can swing playoff races. Several contenders face difficult cap decisions. Toronto must balance new contracts for core players against a need for depth. Vegas continues to operate near the ceiling and will need to clear space before adding more salary. Carolina, fresh off a deep playoff run, has decisions to make in net and on the back end.

One mid-tier forward to watch is Jake DeBrusk. The winger has produced consistent secondary scoring and plays a direct, shot-heavy game. Ottawa profiles as a logical landing spot. The Senators need established scoring on the wing to support their core and can offer DeBrusk a bigger role. A deal in the middle of the top six on a medium-term contract would fit both team’s needs and the player’s desire for more minutes.

Goaltending, as usual, hangs over the market. Connor Hellebuyck’s name returns to the rumor mill each summer, and once again, there is speculation that Winnipeg could listen to offers. To this point, the Jets have chosen to keep their franchise goaltender and retool around him rather than start a full rebuild. Any serious Hellebuyck discussions would likely wait until after the draft, when teams have more clarity on their cap space and long-term plans.

Draft At The Top And What Comes Next

In the draft, Gavin McKenna sits as the consensus favorite to go first overall. His scoring profile, skating, and play-driving ability give him the inside track at No. 1. Several rebuilding and retooling clubs view this pick as a franchise reset. What remains less clear is the exact team drafting him, given the lottery results and potential for trades at the top of the board.

Quinn Hughes, still one of the league’s elite offensive defensemen, has also surfaced in speculative trade talk involving Minnesota. The idea of Hughes running a Wild power play full of young skill is easy to imagine, but the cap math is hard. Minnesota would need to move a significant salary to make it work, and there has been no concrete indication that Vancouver is actively shopping its captain. For now, that scenario falls into the rumor category rather than an imminent move.

Across the league, general managers face a narrow window between the draft, free agency, and arbitration deadlines. Trade requests from players like Larkin and Nurse compress that timeline further. Any move involving those names would ripple through the center and defense markets, alter free-agent priorities, and change how teams approach their cap sheets.

The result is an offseason that feels compressed and volatile. Star-level players hold leverage through clauses and terms. Teams chasing a title or trying to avoid another lost year know the cost of standing still. That combination sets up the rest of June and July to deliver real movement, not just noise.
