Rumors III: Maple Leafs Edition involving the Kings and Stars
  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Source saying that Leafs Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf and Tyler Bozak are attracting interest from around the league. Talk is still in the tire kicking stage though. Nonis stuck to his guns on a Franson deal by wanting a 1st round pick include. He had include Santorelli to get it.

“It was our goal to get as high a pick as possible and what we feel is a very good prospect along with it,” Nonis told the Toronto Sun on Sunday afternoon. “You never know, if you wait longer, if it’s going to get any better or (the quality of offers) is going to drop off.

“You do run the risk of the market changing and you run the risk of injury.”

Nonis will wait on making a Daniel Winnik trade.

“We’re going to make moves whenever they come about, if we feel they can help us,” Nonis said. “Whether or not there are lot more between now and the deadline I really couldn’t say.

“It’s not like we’re trying to move out our whole roster.”

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Leafs aren’t close to moving Daniel Winnik according to a source. The pressure for them to make a move is off a bit for now after yesterday’s trade. They are believed to be looking for a second and a third round pick, or a second round pick and a prospect for Winnik.
  • Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Star: Leafs GM Dave Nonis.

“If we’re trying to put together a young group that can grow together and have a chance to win, you’d have a harder time moving the younger players,” Leafs general manager Dave Nonis told a conference call. “I mean, for us to move Morgan Rielly right now, unless it was something that made so much sense in terms of rebuilding a team, you just wouldn’t do (it). I wouldn’t say ‘untouchable,’ because it’s really anybody, but obviously there are some players that would be very difficult for us to move.”

Daniel Winnik will almost certainly be moved. Olli Jokinen isn’t thrilled to be coming to Toronto. They can look to move Joffrey Lupul and Tyler Bozak. Phil Kessel has to submit his eight teams trade list each year. Dion Phaneuf has to submit a list with more than 10 teams. Kessel and Phaneuf are unlikely to be traded at the deadline.

  • The Fourth Period: Talks between the Kings and Maple Leafs about Dion Phaneuf are ongoing. Multiple league and team sources have said over the past few weeks, and again on Saturday, that they are talking a trade involving Phanuef. The Kings may have to shed some salary to fit him in. The Leafs may have to pay part of Phaneuf’s salary. The Leafs have shown interest in Kyle Clifford, Nick Shore, Dwight King, Brayden McNabb, Jordan Weal and Adrian Kempe. Has been reported that the Kings have to include Mike Richards. The salary cap and Slava Voynov’s situation is complicating things. The Kings could include Justin Williams in a deal, and the Leafs could then flip him and his $3.65 million cap hit. The Leafs have been talking to other teams about Phanuef, including the Stars.
