The Boston Bruins have traded RFA defenseman Dougie Hamilton to the Calgary Flames for a 2015 1st round pick (# 15) and two second round picks (# 45 and # 52).
The 22-year old Hamilton was drafted 9th overall in the 2011 draft by the Bruins.
Thoughts from the media:
Jason Gregor: “Flames blueline is pretty damn good with Hamilton. Wonder what it means long-term of Giordano. He will be 33 UFA or on new deal next year.”
Jim Matheson: “Boston better have long-range plan on def to deal one of best young D in league Hamilton for picks”
Pete Blackburn: “Nothing about any of this makes sense from Bruins standpoint. Maybe worse than Seguin trade. It’s a fireable deal.”
Dean Molberg: “Flames wanted a young D & find a way to maximize extra picks acquired at the deadline. Two birds, one stone. Fine work by Treliving & Co.”
James Mirtle: “Bruins were also offered much higher first rounders than 15th overall, which adds to strangeness of the trade.”
Damien Cox: “Thornton, Kessel, Seguin, Hamilton – does any team give up on “franchise players” faster than BOS?”
Darren Dreger: “Hearing the Bruins asked for good young players and picks from other teams for Hamilton. Good get for Calgary.”
James Mirtle: “Some teams didn’t even seem aware Hamilton was being aggressively shopped today. Bruins auction process for a player this good was flawed.”
Wes Gilbertson: “Worth noting that Dougie Hamilton is a right-handed shot. That’s something #Flames don’t have a lot of on blueline.”
Bob McKenzie: “BOS return marginally better than what they would get if Hamilton got an offer sheet. From CGY side, upgraded pics worth it. Got player.”
Brian Lawton: “Best guess Burkie called BOS and said I am making a Group 2 offer so take the picks I am offering now not next yr #smart4cgy 1 better pick.”
Sean Gentille: “There’s just no way they shopped him the right way. None.”
Matt Larkin: “The 15th overall pick and two seconds for Dougie Hamilton. An unmitigated disaster for Boston. Hamilton was the franchise’s pillar.”
Billy Jaffe: “Bruins must’ve been convinced they couldn’t re sign Dougie at price they were comfortable with. Crazy stuff”
