Rumors III: Friedman Rumor Roundup

Roundup of Friedman’s 30 thoughts …

  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: The Board of Governors will be meeting next week, where the NHL usually gives an estimate on next seasons salary cap. One executive:

“You’re going to be happy if it goes up more than $1M,” one said.

With the Jets attempt Dustin Byfuglien for Travis Hamonic, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the Jets have put him on the trade block. Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff doesn’t really want to trade Tyler Myers or Jacob Trouba. Byfuglien would stay in Winnipeg for the right price, but sense is that Byfuglien needs more term than the Jets may be currently willing to give.

Byfuglien must submit a list of 10 teams that he would accept a trade too.

The Oilers, Islanders and Blues may have talked to see if there was a three-way match. Sounding like that window may have closed.

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen maybe testing the value of center Ryan Johansen. Not positive that they trade him, but teams may make multiple scouting trips to see the Blue Jackets play.

Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli said he won’t make a panic trade. When your team is struggling, teams aren’t looking to help you out and the trade value of your players is usually low – example being Jordan Eberle.

Friedman thinks the Sabres could be a team that considers Canadiens defenseman Jarred Tinordi, who is on a conditioning stint with the St. John’s IceCaps.

Would Jonathan Bernier accept a conditioning stint to get his game back on track? Unlikely any team would claim Bernier.

If no team is going to claim Joni Ortio and his $600,000 salary, hard to figure out a market for Cam Ward.

Thought is that Stars GM Jim Nill would like to add another piece, specifically a defenseman. He continues to say that he prefers to see what he already has.

“We have a lot of pieces, three or four choices internally. You have to find out what you have.”

Good bet Toronto gets an outdoor game for the NHL’s 100th anniversary.

The Kings may be the favorite for the 2017 All-Star game.
