Ottawa Senators coaching candidates

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators have a list of traits they want to have in their next head coach.

  • A teacher who will focus on the development and growth of each player on the team.
  • A listener who encourages feedback from players and the coaching staff.
  • A communicator who lets every team member know where they stand and what is expected.
  • A tactician who brings structure and game planning that will enhance our rebuild.

Potential candidates could include Alain Vigneault, Brad Shaw (Blue Jackets assistant), Troy Mann (Belleville Senators), Mark Crawford, Joel Quenneville, Todd McLellan, Sheldon Keefe, Mike Yeo and Dallas Eakins.

A little more on Mark Stone at the trade deadline

Chris Nichols of Nichols on Hockey: Darren Dreger on TSN 1290 was talking about what may have gone on behind the scenes with Mark Stone, the Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets and Vegas Golden Knights.

Dreger said that things were basically quiet between the Golden Knights and Senators after Sunday morning. The Jets and Senators were talking on Sunday and possibly into Monday morning.

“But I never got the sense – even though I know that Winnipeg definitely, definitely targeted Mark Stone – you have to be willing to negotiate, and I don’t think Ottawa was going off its ask, whatever the ask was. It would have been that first-round pick. Was it Roslovic, was it Niku, was it Stanley – go down the list of all of the good, young Winnipeg Jets players and prospects that they have.”

From the Jets side of things there wasn’t anything that made sense so they moved on to New York Rangers Kevin Hayes. What the Rangers got for Hayes was definitely a lot less then they had hoped.

They were eying one of those good, top, young guys like Roslovic or Vesalainen, or I mentioned Stanley, Niku, some of the other pieces.

Dreger said that with an hour-45 minutes left, the Golden Knights and Senators were close on a players, then the extension had to be worked out. If Stone wouldn’t have committed to the extension, the Golden Knights wouldn’t have done the deal.

The Senators would have quickly turned to Plan B.

“Now, is that the New York Islanders. Lots of speculation that the Islanders were digging around, but they did not want to spend the 9.5 annual, at least that’s what was speculated. And I think the Boston Bruins were kind of nibbling a little bit as well.”
