NHL Rumor: Should the Calgary Flames Consider a Rebuild?

The Calgary Flames are off to a 2-6-1 start and are a hot mess. Should GM Craig Conroy be thinking rebuild?

TSN: Craig Button thinks that a rebuild has to be an on the table for the Calgary Flames.

“All that being said, you look at a team that clearly looks broken. So can you fix it is the question, and you got to look at different options to fix it.

Right now a rebuild has to be on the table for Craig Conroy and the Calgary Flames. You look at last week, three games Tuesday, Thursday, and then Sunday versus the Edmonton Oilers.

A team where the players have talked about being broken by their opponents. Players have talked about how poorly they’ve been playing, and they looked like a broken group. Through two periods on Sunday the Heritage Classic Game, they had zilch, zero in terms of scoring chances at even strength.

So, you look at Craig Conway and you consider that he was trying to find a new climate for his team. That looking to extend players. I would put a full stop on that and say, ‘I’m not signing anybody here long term.’

Because what this team has clearly shown to this point in time, if they’re not capable of winning, they’re not even capable of competing. So when you’re considering signing players who have shown you that they can’t compete, let alone win a game. I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that that’s going to change if you sign the long term.

Stop, fall, look at where your options are. And as painful as it may be. It’s got to be a whole lot less painful than watching the way this team goes out and plays game after game after game. And there’s no signs that it’s changing.

TSN: Craig Button when asked if a rebuild is the best path for the Calgary Flames right now.

Host: “It’s time now for ‘Hot or Not’ with Craig Button. This segment just feels like it was made for the Calgary Flames, Craig. Hot or not, a rebuild would be the best path right now for the Flames who have lost five straight and have the second-worst record in the entire league.”

Button: “Hot. Hot all the way through. When you look at the Calgary Flames, they’re a dumpster fire. And their last five games including their last three have been so bad, I mean, there’s been no effort.

And as painful as rebuild might be, it’s got to be less painful than having to watch his team on a regular basis.

Mackenzie Weegar said last Thursday, that the St. Louis Blues broke them. Well, this team is broken now and they clearly showed that on Sunday in the Heritage Classic.

And this is something that I think has to be seriously contemplated, if not carried out. Craig Conroy, don’t sign anybody long-term. You don’t even know who you want on your team long term, because this right now is a full-blown hot mess.”
