NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks

The rumors might been cooled in the NHL when it comes to the Toronto Maple Leafs head coaching job, but only heating up in Vancouver.

Leafs GM Brad Treliving Backs Head Coach Yet Again

Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving yet again met with the media before the team’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, a day after firing Marc Savard. Treliving placed the onus not only on him but also on the players to improve.

However, don’t expect a coaching change in Toronto anytime soon; he still supports his head coach.

Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic: Brad Treliving: “I want to make it clear. I support Craig fully.”

Jim Biringer: “Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving has now tripled down on Head Coach Craig Berube, giving him yet another vote of confidence.”

Elliotte Friedman: Several sources have said that Berube and GM Brad Treliving aren’t getting fired anytime soon.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Are Going Through an Identity Crisis

Will the Maple Leafs Make Moves as Sellers or Buyers?

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: The Toronto Maple Leafs are not waving the white flag, and their trade philosophy has not changed. GM Brad Treliving is focused on this season and on adding.

NHLRumors.com Note: As it has been documented, the Toronto Maple Leafs don’t have a deep prospect pool. They want to make hockey trades, player-for-player type deals, but they aren’t willing to move a player like Easton Cowan. The earliest first-round pick is in 2028, so moving it is not feasible.

Brad Treliving must evaluate the players he brought in and has on the roster to determine whether to make a move to upgrade the team. Everything might have to come from within.

NHL Rumors: How Big Do the Questions Get for the Toronto Maple Leafs?

The Vancouver Canucks and the Hybrid Rebuild

Thomas Drance of The Athletic: Drance writes about the Vancouver Canucks and the Hybrid Rebuild that GM Patrik Allvin referenced during an appearance on Monday Night Hockey on Amazon Prime when he was asked about the Quinn Hughes trade. Allvin referenced the team’s direction, calling it a retool in a hybrid form.

As Drance notes, the Canucks will look to trade their pending unrestricted free agents for younger assets or draft capital, as the team steps back from playoff contention for the remainder of this season and likely next season. But the goal remains the same: get younger while unloading expiring deals and players with value.

But this middle-of-the-road approach will only hurt the Canucks, as they will remain in the middle and not fully commit to tearing it down and rebuilding the right way. But when they do eventually trade Kiefer Sherwood, they expect to receive more than Los Angeles received for Phillip Danault and Seattle received for Mason Marchment. As for Evander Kane, they will try to get the Marchment package for him.
