Flames Have to Sign Abram Wiebe, and is Whitecloud in Play?

Pat Steinberg: “Does this, in your eyes signify anything other than just the trade. From a Flames standpoint, does this signify any future decisions over the next number of weeks and months leading towards the deadline for Calgary?”

Elliotte Friedman: “Well, I think out of this, number one, the defenseman from North Dakota, Wiebe or Wiebe (pronunciation), I admit, I’m not 100% sure how to pronounce it. He’s not signed right now, so you’ve got to figure out what you’re doing there. I, so figure out to see if you can sign him.
Calgary, I think has two guys in North Dakota, obviously. So they would have seen a lot of this kid. So someone pointed it out to me, Pat, they look at the Flames prospects at North Dakota. So this is someone they would have watched quite a bit. And then the second thing with (Zach) Whitecloud, and I, honestly, I haven’t spoken to Conroy, I do know that a young defenseman was something they wanted as part of this.
But, do they can they consider Whitecloud theirs? Do they keep him? Or is he someone they look to see what the market is for him? I think we all know right now that Craig is looking to see what’s out there and change up their group a bit. But, I’ve heard that the return has to make sense. I think you look at this and you see why Calgary did it.

I have no doubt his phone will continue to ring. I have no doubt that there’ll be calls on, ‘Okay, now that you did this, what are you thinking of a (Blake) Coleman? What are you thinking with (Nazem) Kadri? Where are we here?’
But the immediate thing I look at with the deal is, can they sign the North Dakota defenseman, and what are their long-term plans for Whitecloud?”
