Weegar is Heading to Utah from Calgary
The NHL Trade Deadline is coming fast and furious on Wednesday night. The Calgary Flames are sending defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. As part of the deal, the Flames are getting defenseman Olli Maatta.
Confirmed.
Deal for Weegar includes three second rounders from Utah, including their pick and those acquired from the Rangers and Ottawa.
Unsigned Cornell C Jonathan Castagna and Olli Maatta.
No retention on Weegar’s 5 remaining years.
Massive haul. https://t.co/NPQ96B7hgn— Eric Francis (@EricFrancis) March 5, 2026
In addition to Maatta, the Flames will get up to three second-round picks from 2026, along with prospect Jonathan Castagna.
Of course it depends where they all fall on the Draft board, but #NYR 2nd is very valuable. According to one NHL GM (not part of the deal), general equivalency: two 2nds is roughly equal to one late 1st.
Prospect is unsigned Cornell forward Jonathan Castagna, per source. https://t.co/qGLh7NNs1i

We know Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong wanted to be aggressive, but didn’t want to hurt the prospect pool he assembled. Utah had been sniffing around Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues, but the asking price was too high. However, this didn’t stop him from trying to add to his club, especially on the backend, with the Mammoth holding down a playoff spot in the West.
NHL Rumors: What is the Calgary Flames Timeline to be Competitive?
Weegar is in year three of an eight-year deal that has a salary cap hit of $6.25 million. Remember, Weegar was acquired from the Florida Panthers along with Jonathan Huberdeau as part of the Matthew Tkachuk trade. Weegar is a solid two-way defenseman who is aggressive in all three zones and can move the puck.
MacKenzie Weegar, acquired by UTA, is a two-way defenceman who plays an active and adventurous game in all three zones. Aggressively retrieves loose pucks and blocks passing lanes, and has lots of puck-moving skill himself. Prone to the odd catastrophic screw-up. #TusksUp pic.twitter.com/lLMhLZyz0m

Looks like Weegar is on his way to Utah. Can do a bit of everything. Solid in all 3 zones, moves the puck well, good on the defensive side of the puck. Disruptive.
Adds to a solid blue line / defensive Mammoth team. pic.twitter.com/s8ytjYKXJ8— Mike Kelly (@MikeKellyNHL) March 5, 2026
NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Utah Mammoth, and the Philadelphia Flyers
The trading of Weegar will be a big loss for a Flames team that is looking to open a new building in a couple of years. Weegar could have been a piece to help guide the young Flames through some tough times. However, the goal of Flames GM Craig Conroy was to make the team younger.
MacKenzie Weegar was one of my fav people I’ve covered in sports.
He genuinely embraced being in a Canadian market, liked dealing with media, was a leader, and just an authentic person away from the cameras.
Conroy’s done a nice job of getting good returns in trades…and…

Chicago Sends Dickinson to Edmonton for Mangiapane
Another trade waiting approval was between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers are sending Andrew Mangiapane to the Blackhawks for Jason Dickinson.
NHL Rumors: Two Forward Options for the Edmonton Oilers
The Blackhawks are retaining 50 percent of Dickinson’s $4.25 million salary. Dickinson is in the final year of a two-year deal.
In addition, the Chicago Blackhawks are getting Edmonton’s first-round pick in 2027, which is top 12 protected.

Both the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks swap middle-six forwards. The Oilers were looking for a third-line center with physicality and defensive ability.
Jason Dickinson, reportedly acquired by EDM, is a shut-down centre. Works hard, great stick, some physicality, has done very well in tough deployment in CHI this season. Little offence except a sneaky good curl and drag wrister from range. #LetsGoOilers pic.twitter.com/btO9zdSyv1

Meanwhile, Mangiapane hopes to rediscover the scoring touch he once had in Calgary with the Blackhawks.
Andrew Mangiapane, signed 2x$3.6M by EDM, is a middle six energy winger who has unfortunately not had the prolific shot creation and finishing that made him one of hockey’s most efficient two-way wingers in the early 2020s since his 2023 shoulder injury. NHL Rumors: Chicago Blackhawks; Deadline to the Draft to Training Camp Battles
As noted, the Blackhawks under GM Kyle Davidson are weaponizing cap space and getting assets for players that were not going to be part of the team’s long-term future.
#Blackhawks essentially trade Jason Dickinson, Connor Murphy, unknown player for Manigiapane, a 2027 1st rounder that is protected and a 2028 2nd rounder. Like the value the Blackhawks got here.
Waiting to hear who the unknown player is but I like this https://t.co/GZaQKXOBuJ
