Host: “Dave, last time we were on it was right after the trade deadline, when I was here and talked to you, and we last talked about a lot of deals that got left on the table. Is this still a period where you get a bunch of general managers, and do they continue talks like that? Do they brush up on things? Is there any player transaction type conversations that happen, or you got wind of over the last few days?
NHL Rumors: Kings, Stars, Hurricanes, and Avalanche
Dave Pagnotta: “In terms of rekindling those discussions that were there leading into the deadline, you start to hear a little bit more of what kind of transpired. And you start to hear more names that were bandied about, especially the week of the deadline.
We heard two defensemen, for example. We heard Darnell Nurse‘s name out of Edmonton. We heard Morgan Rielly’s name out of Toronto. In terms of names circulating the week of and whatnot. You start to hear a little bit more of that. But in terms of teams getting back to those discussions, it seems like that’s probably going to be tabled in terms of getting to negotiations until later on in the offseason.
Right now, you get to a point where the GM meetings you had week. Now you want to sit down with some of your scouts. You want to have those scouting meetings, the follow-ups. Where’s everybody at? Who are we looking at? Let’s prepare for the draft. Let’s start to map out, especially for the teams out of it, let’s start to map out, how things are going to look going into the summer, and start prepping for those plans, which, for a good chunk of teams, will include reverting back to those discussions.
And then I’m sure there’s going to be check-ins every now and again, but in terms of getting to the nitty gritty and the meat and potatoes, that’s likely to be served closer to the end of May, in June, and then trickling into draft.
NHL Rumors: What ‘Core’ Should the Vancouver Canucks Keep?
Which guys I hope we were expecting a busy offseason. Last offseason, we didn’t get it. With the way that the free agent pool is looking right now, you got to imagine they’re going to be more teams itching to fill holes via trade.
I’m hoping by the Draft and July 1 time, we see some of those fireworks go off.”
