NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals, and the Vancouver Canucks

Mark Easson 04/10/2026

There has been a lot of speculation the past couple weeks about involving management personnel and coaches, and it will likely continue.

Mike Gillis is more open to returning as a president of hockey ops, and is on the Maple Leafs list

TSN: Mike Gillis is on the Toronto Maple Leafs long list of people they are interested in, and is a strong possibility, according to Pierre LeBrun. Gillis, in past interviews, has said he doesn’t see himself returning as a GM, but in the right circumstances, as a president of hockey ops.

“But the one thing I would say too about Mike Gillis is that he’s a former agent – as you know too Gino – he was an agent for many years before he ended up in Vancouver. On the one side, one of the real hot trends right now is looking at data guys. We know that. We just talked about it. But the other side is former agents turned GM.

Bill Zito is obviously the poster boy. Who’s had more success than him as a former agent turned GM? Kent Hughes. Excelling in Montreal as a former agent turned GM. Well, Mike Gillis is a former agent. All interesting when you find the links between all this.”

The Seattle Kraken Have Massive Organizational Issues That Run Deep

Washington Capitals coach Spencer Carbery doesn’t need to worry about his position if they miss the playoffs

TSN: Even if the Washington Capitals fail to make the playoffs this season, head coach Spencer Carbery doesn’t have anything to worry about, according to Pierre LeBrun’s interview with Capitals GM Chris Patrick.

The words were out of the GM’s mouth before my question was out of my mouth. One hundred per cent Spencer Carbery is their coach. He’s coming back next year. In fact, the quote I got from Chris Patrick was something like “As long as we can have him he’ll be here.”

The Capitals were first in the Metro last season and are currently out of a playoff spot. They’re retooling and adding some youth into their lineup.

NHL Rumors: Canucks, Maple Leafs, Devils, Panthers, and Predators

Shifting management roles for Patrik Allvin? The Predators never asked to speak with Ryan Johnson?

TSN: Could there be some shifting within the Vancouver Canucks hockey operations? Darren Dreger notes that GM Patrick Allvin’s seemed safe a week ago, but now it may be 50-50, according to a source. They still like Allvin, but he could be moved to a different role.

Have been told that the Nashville Predators didn’t ask for permission to speak with Abbotsford GM Ryan Johnson, therefore no request was denied. (Rick Dhaliwal reported that the Canucks denied the Predators permission to speak with Johnson)

No decision has been made by the Canucks about a coaching change, but Abbotsford’s coach, Manny Malhotra, is ready.
