Are Changes Coming to the Vancouver Canucks Management and Coaching Staff?

Speculation is picking up around the Vancouver Canucks GM position, and their head coach. Will Ryan Johnson replace Patrik Allvin? Will Manny Malhotra replace Adam Foote?

The Canucks deny the Predators permission to talk to Ryan Johnson

Donnie & Dhali: Rick Dhaliwal and Don Taylor, talking about the Vancouver management and coaching situations. The Canucks denied the Nashville Predators permission to talk to Abbotsford Canucks (AHL) GM Ryan Johnson. It sounds like President Jim Rutherford could be safe, but the futures of GM Patrik Allvin and head coach Adam Foote are in question.

** NHLRumors.com transcription

Dhaliwal: “I’ve been told Donnie the Canucks have denied Nashville permission to talk with Abbotsford Canucks GM Ryan Johnson about their GM opening. Johnson lives in Nashville in the offseason.

…

Does this mean a promotion for Johnson? Sure seems like the Canucks are saying, they can’t afford to lose this guy. Several teams are going to be courting him. Johnson’s under contract. He can’t talk to any team without permission.

I am not hearing that he’s got a job lined up in Vancouver, or is even talking to the Canucks about a promotion right now. He, Johnson could ask for permission from the Canucks after the season if he wants to, Don, to pursue jobs. That could take place if he wants.

One thing that Johnson has got to be worried about if he takes the Vancouver job, how much control does he have? We know Jim Rutherford runs the show, right? We know that Allvin didn’t have much power. That would be a concern for me, for anyone taking the GM job.

The reality is, the Canucks are looking straight at a lot of teams eyeing Johnson and Manny Malhotra, and they’re going to have to adjust accordingly. Bottom line.”

NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks, New Jersey Devils, and the Toronto Maple Leafs

What does it mean for Allvin and Johnson’s and future?

Taylor: “What does this mean for Patrick Allvin?”

Dhaliwal: “Every day, there’s a new rumor. Every day, five people tell me Foote’s gone, he’s staying. Five more tell me Allvin’s gone, he’s staying. One thing I do hear that is a constant, and I’ve been saying this for a few weeks, is Jim Rutherford is not going anywhere. I don’t, I haven’t had one person tell me Jim’s gone. Would you want to leave Vancouver in 32nd place, Don? Is that what you want your legacy to be? I don’t think so.”

Taylor: “What does the owner want? What do the fans want?”

Dhaliwal: “The owner? He’s the key in this whole thing. He’s the key in the whole thing, is the owner. What is he thinking? What’s the family thinking, Don? What’s the family thinking?”

Taylor: “How can they possibly look at what Jim Rutherford has done here in Vancouver and say, “We’re keeping him and maybe let Ryan Johnson go?”

Dhaliwal: “Yeah, it’s a, it was a, when I heard that he was denied permission to talk to Nashville, it was very surprising to me, Don. Very, very surprising. But I don’t think they’re announcing a position for him today or tomorrow in Vancouver with the Canucks. So, there is that.”

Taylor: “At what point can he say, you talked about him asking permission to talk to Nashville?”

Dhaliwal: “It was Nashville calling.”

Taylor: “So, after the season, he could go and say, he’s got time left in his deal.”

Dhaliwal: “I think he’s got one year left.”

Taylor: “Okay, like a lot of them do. Like, Rutherford’s got a year left. Allvin’s got a year left. I believe Adam Foote has two years left.

He can go and say, ‘Look, I’ve got a job opportunity in Nashville, where I have some roots. Is it okay if I talk with them? But they, at this point, don’t want the Predators talking to him; the other way around.”

Filip Hronek Among Candidates for Canucks Captaincy?

Taj: Rick Dhaliwal on Tuesday said on the Donnie and Dhali show, that he was told by someone on Monday night that Canucks ownership was going to keep all three – Jim Rutherford, Patrik Allvin, and Adam Foote.

Dhaliwal mentioned that if the Canucks were to replace Allvin or Foote, it would be a cheaper option and not a big name.

haliwal: “Exactly, and Nashville’s taken forever.”
