NHL Rumors: All About Sergei Bobrovsky and Steve Yzerman

Chris Wassel 04/20/2026

The Florida Panthers season was over before it started and they could be listening on Sergei Bobrovsky but this could a play for a new contract.

Everyone Wants To Keep Sergei Bobrovsky In Florida

George Richards of Florida Hockey NOW: The Florida Panthers want to keep Sergei Bobrovsky in Florida. Now, the question is, how much will it cost to keep him there? From players to management, the sentiment is very clear. No one wants the goaltender to leave in free agency.

So, the Florida goaltender comes off that huge long-term contract. What does one pay a soon-to-be 38-year-old goalie in this modern NHL? From Matthew Tkachuk to Aleksander Barkov, one thing is abundantly clear. No one wants Bobrovsky to leave just yet.

The Panthers will save money inking the Russian to a new deal. The question becomes how much. $5 million AAV seems to be a floated around figure, but it could be more or less.

NHL Rumors: Evgeni Malkin Contract Conversation

A new deal comes down to an agreed dollar amount. Bobrovsky was never going to be dealt at the trade deadline, and there is a good chance he returns to South Florida for 2026-27.

Steve Yzerman And The Detroit Dilemma

Max Bultman of The Athletic: The Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs again despite appearing to have a spot all but locked up after the Olympic Break. Detroit stumbled down the stretch and was officially eliminated by the New Jersey Devils of all teams. With another summer of dilemma and uncertainty likely, what does Steve Yzerman do?

Honestly, Yzerman is not going anywhere unless it is on his own accord. Changes around him are very possible. A few new voices could be added to the mix. Players like Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Larkin are not getting any younger. Larkin will be 30 next year, and DeBrincat is not far behind. Prime windows cannot be wasted, which means is there an imminent contention plan?

With so many ifs in Detroit’s farm system, the Red Wings roster philosophy may need upgrades and an update.

NHL Rumors: What Is Going On Vancouver?

Could a move for physicality happen in the summer? Yes. Maybe it comes in the form of a reclamation project. Also, a presence on the penalty kill would not hurt. Detroit’s penalty kill dropped off after the Olympic Break in a dramatic way. Simply, Yzerman’s leash is getting shorter.
