Gino Reda: “And there were a number of trades at the draft, including the Anaheim Ducks trading Mason McTavish to the Blues for the 15th and 29th picks overall. So, now the question is, where do the Ducks go from here?”
Johnston: “Yeah, kind of a strange day for the Ducks. This is a team that made the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. They sort of looked like sellers on the day, because they send McTavish for two draft picks, also Olen Zellweger going to Buffalo.
Where do things stand with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Zach Werenski?
But what I can tell you, Gino, is first of all they were in on a number of other players that moved elsewhere that they weren’t able to land in trades. And now that they’ve added some of this extra capital, I think they’re in a great position to look to add to their team. Because certainly they are not in a selling mindset as we get to this offseason.
And one area I think they’ll really be looking hard at is the right side of their blue line. They have the possibility of Jacob Trouba hitting the open market on Wednesday, on July 1st. They’ve still had some discussions with his agent, they’re trying to see if there’s a fit there. But if not, they’re losing John Carlson, potentially Radko Gudas, and Jacob Trouba. They’re going to be adding to their blue line. I think they’re going to be pretty aggressive in the trade market as well.
So this was one day of the offseason, but this isn’t going to be what their offseason looks like, big picture.”
Would a team trade for Jason Robertson without knowing if he’d extend with them?

“Now, I mentioned Dallas a couple of seconds ago. They have another developing situation, and that is Jason Robertson. A couple of nights ago, the Stars agreed to a trade with Seattle. Seattle offered him 18 years, eight years of approximately $15 million. Robertson turned down the offer, but Dallas is still actively trying to trade him.

Now, the other thing that may have developed out of this is that, what it could mean is that teams may have to trade for Robertson, who’s got one more year, because that has been the free agent without knowing if he will sign with them. And we’ll see if anybody takes that gamble.”
