NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Bryan Rust and Kirby Dach
Host: “What about Kirby Dach, who also filed for arbitration? Are you a little bit surprised at this decision, considering the injury history and the lack of games played here for Kirby Dach?”
Anthony Di Marco: “I mean, a little bit, but probably in the current day NHL, he’s maybe thinking that he’s worth more than the Canadiens feel he is worth to the team. I just think at this point in time for Dach, maybe it’s like, ‘hey, might as well try my chance to get more money.’ Obviously, after the early gafe in the playoffs, he did come on a little bit more as the playoffs went on deeper, but I don’t know.
As far as Dach is concerned, I just think that it’s like, ‘hey, why not give it a chance here to get a little bit more money out of this thing.’ But I don’t think it’s going to be like a massive, massive contract that he gets. He probably just says he’s worth $1 million to $2 million more than the Canadians feel he’s worth to their team at this point.
NHLRumors.com Note: The salary arbitration hearing for Kirby Dach and the Canadiens is set for Thursday, July 30th. Now the two parties can agree on something before the hearing. While his qualifying offer was $4 million, Dach is trying to get more, even though the Canadiens want to get him on a lower figure. However, a trade can’t be ruled out, especially if Montreal tries to upgrade elsewhere.
Is there a market for Samuel Montembeault?
Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff joined TSN Radio in Montreal and was asked about Sam Montembeault and the Montreal Canadiens. Is he the odd man out entering the season, given the new contract extension for Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler waiting in the wings?

NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens Make a Move When It’s Least Expected?
Host: “Anthony, just go local here for a second. When it comes to the Montreal Canadiens and the goaltending position, everybody’s up in cottage country, and that’s fantastic. So when they get back to work here, like, is there a market for Sam Montembeault? If I fast forward to the middle of October and they kick off the NHL season, and the Canadiens, what they may still be with three goalies, and if that is the case, which one will be in the American Hockey League?”
Anthony Di Marco: “I would imagine it is Sam Montembeault, and is there a market for him? Like, look, Sam Ersson has statistically been the worst goalie in the NHL the last two seasons, and he somehow got a raise from the Ottawa Senators. So, just when you think there isn’t a market for a goalie, there is another position that kind of pops up here, and another team that I’m curious about with Montembeault is the team that drafted him, the Florida Panthers.
NHL Rumors: Are the Edmonton Oilers Finished with Their Offseason Moves?
They completely rejigged their goaltending outlook going into the season, bringing back Jacob Markstrom Akira Schmid over from the Vegas Golden Knights. But I mean, look, Montembeault had a really bad year, but it was not too long ago that he was the third goalie for Team Canada at the Four Nations Face-Off.
He has what, one more year left on his contract, and a reasonable AAV, I think, as well. So I think that Montembeault could show signs of getting his game back. There would be a market for him, and like in the modern-day NHL, you probably need three goaltenders. So whether it’s in Montreal or elsewhere, I think we’ll see that Montembeault get meaningful games this season, one way or another.”
