Outlook for the Season:
After seven straight trips to the postseason, including a Stanley Cup win and a loss in another Cup Final, the Bruins missed the playoffs last season and rapid changes swept over the entire organization. Has the contender window closed in Boston?
Leaving out the lockout-shortened season, their 96 points last season were more points than two of the seven straight seasons the club made the playoffs. If the Senators hadn’t stumbled upon Andrew Hammond and blazed into the playoffs from well back in the standings, the Bruins would likely have played postseason hockey.
When the dust settled, the Bruins installed Don Sweeney as the team’s new general manager, bid farewell to core players Dougie Hamilton and Milan Lucic, and added Jimmy Hayes, Matt Beleskey, Zac Rinaldo, and Matt Irwin to the NHL roster.
The group of newcomers offers an interesting mix:
Jimmy Hayes has yet to receive consistent top-line minutes in the NHL. His goals per 60 minutes rate suggests that he has something to offer in a top-six role in Boston.
Signed away from the Anaheim Ducks, Beleskey is an advanced statistical version of Hayes, offering goals and passable puck possession play.
One of the most questionable of Sweeney’s off-season moves, Rinaldo is known for his willingness to play rough and his inability to do virtually anything else. His fourth-line minutes are nothing to get excited about as the Bruins rebuild on the fly.
The sneakiest of all Sweeney’s offseason moves, Matt Irwin never received consistent minutes in San Jose. The Bruins are thin on defense, so Irwin will finally get his shot to show that his top-pairing rate stats can hold up as his time-on-ice increases.
Amidst all of the changes, the key members of the Bruins’ core remain. Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand form one of the league’s most dynamic puck possession duos. As Justin Bourne wrote for The Score:
Together form a machine-like, do-it-all duo who can play it anyway you want. They make each other better, and provide us with a legitimate example where “chemistry” is visible to the naked eye, and has the numbers to back it up.
Hulking blueline terror Zdeno Chara returns. Though he’s 38 years old and coming off of nagging injuries to his knee and ankle last season, Chara is now healthy and capable of changing the course of any game with a hit, a goal, or a smothering of the other team’s star.
The Bruins’ number one goaltender returns. Tuukka Rask is firmly established as one of the game’s top-tier elite goaltenders. Over the past three years, few are in his company in save percentage, adjusted save percentage, or save percentage on high-danger shots:
Finally, Claude Julien returns for his ninth season behind Boston’s bench. Only Art Ross, the Bruins’ first head coach, has coached as many years consecutively as Julien. In the modern era, coaches with Julien’s staying power are rare.
With stability throughout the team’s core and some good-value additions around the roster, the Bruins start off the season in reasonable shape. The forward corps is reasonably constructed and the team’s goaltending is elite. The blue line is an issue, but steps forward from youngsters like Zach Trotman or Irwin will go a long way towards steadying the back end.
Trending Up:
David Pastrnak – after scoring 27 points in 46 games as an 18-year-old, Pastrnak showed that he’s capable of handling some of the rigors of the NHL. Pastrnak’s production soared once he joined Ryan Spooner and Lucic as linemates. With Lucic now in Los Angeles, Amalie Benjamin speculates that Pastrnak could continue to pair with Spooner with David Krejci joining the line as their centre. If this happens, Krejci’s setup skills will certainly boost Pastrnak’s overall counting stats.
Matt Irwin – The 6’2, 210 lbs 27-year-old could finally get a shot to show he deserves regular minutes. He’s known for his offensive instincts and overall ability. With 50 points in 153 games as a depth defender, it’s reasonable to expect Irwin to score 30 points this season if given the minutes.
Brett Connolly – a potential winger for the Bergeron-Marchand duo, Connolly has shown lots of promise throughout his career. With some health and a prime lineup location, Connolly could easily score 20 goals this season. Though he cannot replace Lucic’s truculence, he may well be able to replace Lucic’s offensive production.

The Defense: Some projections list the Bruins’ top-six will break down like this:
Chara – Trotman
Seidenberg – Krug
Miller – McQuaid
Chara remains sturdy, but is reaching the end of an illustrious career. Krug’s shown strong offensive statistics and will be asked to lead the blueliners offensively. There’s lots to like about Zach Trotman and if he’s paired with Chara again, he’ll be serviceable.
So why is this group trending down?
Seidenberg, Miller, and McQuaid are questionable defensive options – though Irwin figures to bump one of these defensemen out of the starting lineup early in the season (probably Miller). Seidenberg is 34 years old and in definite decline. Miller and McQuaid boast little upside. This trio finished at the bottom of the team’s possession ranks. Altogether, this group is the team’s weakest link.
Trade Deadline Outlook:
The Bruins just missed the postseason last year. In a fluctuating Eastern Conference, it’s easy to imagine the Senators and Bruins jostling for the final playoff spot again this season. If the Bruins are indeed a bubble team, expect them to tinker at the trade deadline, probably resisting any large moves, instead targeting cheap options to improve the blue line.
However, Don Sweeney has proven to be anything but predictable in his short time as the team’s general manager. Though the forwards and goalie ranks seem safe, Chara and Seidenberg are both approaching retirement. It’s possible Sweeney could look to swing big at the trade deadline regardless of the team’s position in the standings, hoping to secure a top-pair defenseman.
In Don Sweeney’s world, anything is possible.

1. Malcolm Subban: Goaltender -6’2” / 200 lbs – Subban has completed two seasons of pro in Providence, sharing time last season with Jeremy Smith, who out performed Subban slightly. Subban made his NHL debut in St. Louis and was woefully pulled after three goals on six shots. With the departure of Svedberg to the KHL, and Sweeny flipping goalie Martin Jones, the backup position likely will fall to Smith unless something else changes. Subban would benefit from another season in the AHL, but the Bruins have other impressive goalie prospects coming down the pipe including McIntyre (more on him below) and 2015 third round pick (75 overall) Daniel Vlader. There has been some speculation that Subban may be traded to diversify their positional assets.
2. Joe Morrow: Defense – 6’1” / 208 lbs – Made his NHL debut playing in 15 games seeing 16:41 of ice time on average and scored his first NHL goal. In 227 career junior games, Morrow scored 151 points and has 60 points in 155 career AHL games, proving his offensive ability is significant. Morrow has good size, skating ability and offensive instincts making him a good all-around player. With the departure of Hamilton, Morrow takes a big step up the depth chart and is poised to earn a regular roster spot out of training camp.
3. Alexander Khokhlachev: Center – 5’11” / 184 lbs – In his second AHL season Khokhlachev earned All-Star status as the Bruins top scorer. His offensive skills are not in question, but like many young small offensive forwards, his defensive game needs to improve before Coach Julien will allow him onto the Bruins roster. The top two centre positions are filled long term by Bergeron and Krejci with Ryan Spooner, Chris Kelly and Joonas Kamppainen possibly competing for the last two positions. Unless he can steal a top six position out of camp, Khokhlachev will likely return for another season in the AHL.
4. Jake Debrusk: Left Wing – 6’0” 174 lbs – Selected slightly higher than projected, the Bruins obviously were enamored with DeBrusk who projects as a solid two-way winger. While his ceiling may not be as high as some of the players the Bruins passed on, he is a more reliable player to play in the NHL. While his offence was significant last season in the WHL, scoring 81 points in 72 games, his calling card is his hustle and work ethic.
5. Jakub Zboril: Defense – 6’2” 185 lbs – Zboril is a two-way defenceman with a physical edge that requires the other team to keep their head up. Zboril was a cut from the Czech world junior roster that had everything to do with politics and nothing to do with skill. In 44 games in the Q, he scored 33 points and had 73 penalty minutes.
