Injuries and Notes: Pens, Lightning, Flyers, Hawks, Jackets and Oilers
  • Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins Evgeni Malkin was back on the ice over the weekend. He was working with their strength and conditioning coach last week, but Saturday was the first time he was back on the ice. The last time he was on the ice was an informal workout on September 8th.
  • Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times: Lightning’s Jonathan Drouin had follow up x-rays done on his fractured right thumb on Saturday and is “right on track” according to GM Steve Yzerman. He’s likely to start the year on the IR.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers Wayne Simmonds arrived at the rink yesterday morning in a walking boot. He hasn’t practiced since last week after being injured on Tuesday in a game against the Rangers. He blocked a shot six minutes into the game, but was after to finish.

    “Right now, he’s out,” Berube said. “And he hasn’t practiced, so we’ll see about (Monday). If he can get on the ice (Monday) and then maybe practice the next day, maybe I’ll consider putting him in (Wednesday). I don’t know. Right now it’s up in the air.”

    Chris Kuc: Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival (upper-body) is doubtful for their season opener.

  • Shawn Mitchell: Put on the IR by the Blue Jackets: Boone Jenner (hand), Nathan Horton (back), Sonny Milano (face) and Ryan Murray (knee).
  • JoAnne Ireland: Oilers GM Craig McTavish said that Tyler Pitlick lost out on a roster spot as they wanted the 13th forward to be a center.
  • Scott Powers: Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said that Teuvo Teravainen is close to breaking the NHL but decision to send him to the AHL to get more experience and because of their depth at center.
