Is this the Offseason that the Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Morgan Rielly?

Things seem to be pointing to the Toronto Maple Leafs trading Morgan Rielly this offseason. He hasn't give the okay to waive his no-movement clause yet, but it could come at some point.

No green light from Morgan Rielly yet

Chris Johnston: Sources say that Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly hasn’t given the green light to waive his no-movement clause at this point. Any reports that he’s waived it are false.

Is this the offseason that the Toronto Maple Leafs trade Morgan Rielly?

Jonas Siegel of The Athletic: After years of speculation, this could be the offseason where the Toronto Maple Leafs move defenseman Morgan Rielly. Talks between Rielly’s agents, J.P. Barry, John Chayka, and Mats Sundin have been ongoing, according to a source.

Both Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers Can Benefit From Their Hockey Trade

Rielly holds the hammer on where he ends up, as he has a no-movement clause. Would Rielly have an interest in playing for the San Jose Sharks, who need defensemen? Would he be interested in returning home in B.C. and playing for the rebuilding Canucks? Does he just want to play for a contender?

There would then be lots of questions around the return, if salary was retained or bad contracts attached. Rielly has four years left at $7.5 million.

If dealing with the Sharks, could Dmitry Orlov (one year left at $6.5 million) be part of the deal? Would it make sense to swap with the Oilers and Darnell Nurse, if part of his four-year, $9.25 million contract was retained? What about a Rielly for Brock Boeser? Boeser has six years left at $7.25 million.

A fresh start somewhere could rejuvenate Rielly’s career, something that seems unlikely to happen in Toronto.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: Signs are pointing to the Toronto Maple Leafs trading defenseman Morgan Rielly this offseason. The sides are working together. Agent J.P. Barry gave the Leafs a list of teams that Rielly would consider a trade to, and got the sense that most are in the Western Conference.

There could be some flexibility to that as talks evolve. If someone not on the list approaches the Leafs about a deal, it doesn’t mean Rielly would say no to going there.

Toronto Maple Leafs Hire Jim Hiller as Next Head Coach

The San Jose Sharks would make sense, and don’t believe that the Vancouver Canucks are on the list.

Rielly’s cap hit is $7.5 million for four more years, but his salary is down to $6 million.
