The Dallas Stars are working on July 1st deadline for Jason Robertson
JayOnSC: Pierre LeBrun on TSN with Jay Onrait, talking about Dallas Stars pending RFA winger Jason Robertson. Can they work out a contract before July 1st, as teams think about possibly trading for him or consider offer sheeting him?
** NHLRumors.com transcription
Onrait: “And then maybe the most intriguing player out there, Jason Robertson. We are still waiting for either the Stars to sign him, or maybe they trade him, or maybe Pierre, do we finally get that blockbuster offer sheet we’re all waiting for, and rubbing our hands for? What’s the latest right now on Jason Robertson?”
NHL Rumors: Puljujarvi, Flyers, Sharks, Robertson, Nikushkin, McTavish, and Senators
LeBrun: “Well, I think the offer sheet is something that the Dallas Stars are concerned about to some level. Because they don’t want to lose control of Jason Robertson, in terms of what his next contract looks like. It’s easy to say we’ll match anything, but not if it’s at a number that doesn’t work for what you’re trying to do, right?
Remember, Dallas also has to re-sign Maverik Bourque, who’s RFA, by the way, another potential offer sheet candidate.
So I will say this, I mean, earlier on Wednesday, I know there were people speculating that the contract talks have gone so badly between Dallas and Jason Robertson that they were off the rails, and that Dallas was definitely going to trade them. I looked into it with a couple of different sources involved in that negotiation. I was told that it’s not the case. They’re not done talking. Both sides are committed to keep at it here over the next couple days, and to try and find some common ground on extension for Jason Robertson.
- NHL Rumour Report: David Pagnotta on Leafs Morning Take on Robertson: “My understanding…Dallas went back to Jason Robertson’s camp last week with an offer…clearly not accepted; the word is, $14+ per year, I’ve heard upwards of 15, and some teams prepared to go that route, even the offer sheet direction.”
So they’re not done talking. Having said that, the Dallas Stars have no choice, and I know from talking to other teams, they continue to do their due diligence on the trade market to see, you know, how they can maximize Jason Roberts, Jason Robertson’s trade value if they have to go to plan B and trade him.
but like I said, the offer sheet threat, which is next July, next week, July 1st, that acts as a bit of a deadline in this entire Jason Robertson situation. And so there are certainly some teams, you know, sitting back and waiting to see if they can pounce on that situation. We’ll see.
Salary Cap Squeeze Fuels Aggressive NHL Trade Market in Front of the Draft
I think Robertson really wants to stay in Dallas. I mean, it’s the team that’s knocking out the door every year. But you know, for the Dallas Stars, I just don’t think they can stomach making him the highest paid player on the team, right. Which is where the ask is right now, according to what I’m hearing.
So, let’s see, you know, I always say deadlines are there for a reason. Everyone stops the poker face and shows their real hand closer to a deadline. So we’ll see what happens on that.”
