NHL Injury Notes: Hurricanes, Avs, Kings, Devils, Islanders, Maple Leafs and More

Among the NHL injury notes are that Seth Jarvis is a little bit ahead of schedule, and that Cale Makar could be ready to join the team on the ice next week.

Amalie Benjamin: The last couple of offseason, Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak had been dealing with injury issues, including last year with knee tendinitis. This past offseason, Pastrnak said it was his best in years as he didn’t have to deal with any rehab or training around an issue.

Walt Ruff: Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis had offseason shoulder surgery, and he could be a little bit ahead of schedule. Coach Rod Brind’Amour said that Jarvis is skating well and looks good, and added:

“(The medical staff) is not going to rush him back.” “When he’s ready, he’ll let us know. We’ll get him in there as soon as we can.”

NHL: Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar on defenseman Cale Makar:

“I don’t want to throw him out there for a full, heavy practice after not being on the ice and having a chance to build up a little bit. And I’m guessing by next week we’re going to get into some special teams and stuff, and I think he’ll be full-go for practice, and we’ll still try and get him in one of those last two exhibition games.”

NHL Rumors: Flyers, Rangers, and the Jets

Robert Tiffin: Dallas Stars forward Matt Duchene took a maintenance day and won’t be on the ice for the next couple of days as a precaution. Coach Glen Gulutzan said it’s not long-term.

NHL: Los Angeles Kings defenseman Brian Dumoulin failed his physical and was sent for further testing. Forward Kevin Fiala broke his left lower leg at the Olympics, and the Kings are hopeful that he’ll be back in the lineup for the start of November.

Kings GM Ken Holland on Fiala, “He can’t do anything for two weeks until the scar heals. … Three to four weeks, he’s going to be on the ice with the team, but we’ll see how his body reacts to surgery.”

Alexander Legget: Kings forward Mats Zuccarello was on the ice in a no-contact jersey.

NHL: New Jersey Devils forward Nick Bjugstad had offseason surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle that he suffered earlier this month. He’ll be out four to six months.

Stefen Rosner: New York Islanders GM Mathieu Darche forward Mathew Barzal:

“Well, it’s something that we’ve been managing for over a year, right? Unfortunately, I was in the building when he took that shot, and we’ve been managing it. Last year, we managed it. Every now and then there’s some inflammation, and just over the summer, as he ramped up, there was a bit more inflammation. So we just want to make sure that we control it. So it’s nothing new. It’s just something we have to control.”

Stefen Rosner: Semyon Varlamov’s last game for the Islanders was November 29th, 2024. The 38-year-old is back as a full participant in training camp after having surgery to partially replace both knees.

“I just wasn’t ready to retire mentally,” Varlamov said. “I just wasn’t there. Of course, there were definitely some days it was in my mind when things were not going well. … I was thinking, ‘Maybe, maybe this is it. I won’t be able to come back.’

“(But) I’m finally feeling good and I’m feeling 100 percent on the first day of the training, so I’m very, very excited and looking forward to playing again.”

Lots of questions surrounding Quinn Hughes and the Minnesota Wild

Jordan Hall: Philadelphia Flyers forward Nikita Grebenkin will miss the first few days of training camp as something flared up.

NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi failed his physical after having offseason surgery. GM John Chayka on Domi, “He’s going to address that personally about his injury in the near future.”
