Teams having a hard time justifying Marner offer sheet
Jonah (@yyzsportsmedia): Brian Burke said on Sportsnet 590 that teams are having a hard time justifying the money the Marner wants and that the Maple Leafs won’t match the offer.
Teams don’t want to piss the Maple Leafs off and not end up getting Marner. The number to get it possibly done doesn’t make sense.
Blue Jackets looked at a Marner offer sheet
Aaron Portzline: There have been many teams that have spoken with Mitch Marner‘s agent about a potential offer sheet.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have been one of those teams. has seen no indication that Marner really wants to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Also, the Blue Jackets seem convinced that the Maple Leafs could and would may any offer sheet. If the Leafs had too, they could trade William Nylander to free up more salary cap space.
Aaron Portzline: “One of the unwritten rules of playing the offer sheet game, is to make sure your own house is in order before you start looking through your neighbor’s belongings.
#CBJ still have D Zach Werenski as an unsigned RFA. Next year, Dubois will be RFA. And so on.”
Emily Sadler of Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman on his 31 Thoughts podcast about a Mitch Marner offer sheet.
“This is what I’ve heard about Marner. And again, everybody’s being quiet so we’ll see how close to the truth this actually is. Last Friday, when Joey said that, everybody was talking about the Islanders. I think there was another team before that and my belief is that team was Columbus. I think they were thinking about it.”
The big issue with a potential offer sheet from the Blue Jackets to Marner was term.
“I think what happened was, if Columbus was going to do it, it had to be for seven years. And I think what I heard Marner was looking for, or his side was looking for, was less term than that,” Friedman said. “But I had multiple people telling me that they thought if anybody was going to do it, it was going to be Columbus.”
